ShaharThorne -> Computer question (need techs here) (5/1/2012 3:10:34 PM)

For the past week, my HD has been running rough on Java sites (Pogo and Runescape). When I go to other sites, no 'running' noise. Mom thinks its about to run down, I think it needs more memory (6 gigs). The computer is 2 1/2 years old and I have the latest Java running (6.31). Help me figure this out because I don't want to take it to the shop for repairs (it also has 2 HD, one completely full with Windows 7 and the other having hardly anything).

ashjor911 -> RE: Computer question (need techs here) (5/1/2012 3:15:08 PM)

what is the HD.. you are talking about... PC or laptop?

PS: I think 6GB ram is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than Enouf

strangedesire -> RE: Computer question (need techs here) (5/1/2012 3:16:01 PM)

What does "running rough" mean? The more detail, the better.

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: Computer question (need techs here) (5/1/2012 3:16:48 PM)

Please describe what you mean by running rough? Is it making a noise? And I mean a noise different from it's usual noise? It's common for some HD's to chirp. If it is making a grinding sound, this is not good news. Is it overheating? Losing an internal fan is common and causes overheating which can effect all your pc's insides.

So is it grinding, whiring in an ever increasing rhythm and then suddenly stopping, or what? We need to know the exact noise, this is like diagnosing a car issue.

ashjor911 -> RE: Computer question (need techs here) (5/1/2012 3:19:40 PM)

oh dear Lord.... its called HDD... short for internal Hard Drive.....[>:]

& any noise is ok... its the ticking sound on the start you need to worry about...

ShaharThorne -> RE: Computer question (need techs here) (5/1/2012 3:41:46 PM)

It is a desktop and the noise is a whirling type of noise. I sorry for not being specific but its has my mom worried (she thinks the computer is about to die, hence more money into keeping it fixed). She swears its the modem but we have satellite broadband and that sucker never makes a noise. Right now, no noise, but if I get on certain games on Pogo or Runescape, the noise starts up and I experience lag on the games. I also think its due for an internal checkup since it has been in the same spot since I got it out of the box.

Karmastic -> RE: Computer question (need techs here) (5/1/2012 3:45:34 PM)

i presume that you mean the hard drive kicks in and/or fans speed up when you visit sites that you think are heavy on java.

here's a few shots in the dark:

1. clear the browser cache

2. also ensure to clear the download history list. i would also clear cookies, but that's me.

2b. note the default setting for disk caching on the browser, and experiment with different settings

3. try another browser (I suggest Firefox) and see if you have same problem.

4. turn off java on browser, see if you have same problem

5. use Window Washer, or other utils to clean things out

EDIT: i'm just reading your last post. same advice. also, run disk defrag.

pss - it's not unusual for many games to need extensive resources, so thefans kick in as things heat up. my machines always do that when i'm playing a DOS shell game like Starcraft.

its comming from the fans in there.. what you need to do is:
1- get yourself a (air gun) or blower... not the nughty kind... the kind that blow air..
2- shut it down. the PC.
3- dis connect all the wires on the back of it.
4- open that case.. its where the CPU are.. open the led or just the sleeve.
5- take it outside.. we dont want you to make a miss now do we?
6- put some dust mask on .... suergical mask will do.. & try to breath from your nose.
7- blow that (SOB).. foucus on the fans there inside. the CPU huge fan & the graphic card fan also, & dont forget the power supply fan
8- close it up... put the wires back.. tell me if the sound is there still..

PS: when you open it up, like this pics... you may lose warantee .. I dont know about warantee laws in US..

Please be carefull not to harm yourself..

Soyokaze -> RE: Computer question (need techs here) (5/1/2012 4:53:00 PM)

When blowing out fans hold them so they don't spin. forcing them to spin with compressed air will damage the bearing. Also, if you're lazy like me you might need a brush to get really caked on dust out (make sure you ground everything first if doing this!).

I really hope you have 64 bit windows by the way or having over ~3 gigs of ram will do nothing as 32 bit only supports 4 gigs of memory addressing (other stuff uses addresses too).

Defragging and moving some stuff off your main drive would be my first moves personally. If a drive is completely full it'll start working dog slow and you also might not have enough virtual memory.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Computer question (need techs here) (5/1/2012 4:58:29 PM)

The defrag did the job. Guess Mom has been turning off my scheduled times for it to work (after midnight when everyone should be in bed).

Ash, the warranty expired about 6 months ago. I will probably sweettalk Mom to let me get a can of air and give this thing a BJ (got to get Ron jealous).

ashjor911 -> RE: Computer question (need techs here) (5/1/2012 6:54:33 PM)

Now you owe me some nughty pics [:D]

Karmastic -> RE: Computer question (need techs here) (5/1/2012 7:02:53 PM)

i wanna a cookie, was my idea

I don't think it's a great sweat, ST. Even if the HDD is kaput (which is unlikely), they're not that expensive to replace these days. The thing is to save everything vital on it before that finally happens.

If I were 'blowing' my pooter, I'd also make a point of pulling out the connections and pushing them back in again. That's solved many a problem for me in the past. (As has cleaning the fans and vents.)

Been a while since I used a PC regularly, but when I did, disk defrag I scheduled fairly regularly, do it maybe once a week and start at a time when you're not going to use your computer...

I've researched your question thoroughly....looked in every nook and cranny....here's what I've come up with.

You need a new computer.

The defrag did the job.

That's where I was going to go. Since you're already there, get yourself a better defragger while you're at it.

I suggest downloading CrapCleaner. The newest version lets you select the cookies you want to keep (IIRC)(like your CM log-in).

Autoruns is a good program to see what is loaded at startup. There are programs and services you don't need to run all the time. (be VERY careful about disabling services.

MAlwareBytes and Spyware Blaster are both excellent at finding malware (Spyware B. found things Mwbytes didn't). As-Aware (Lavasoft) is good for finding spyware.

All of the above might help your machine run faster, with less HD use. Oh, and you can turn file indexing off.

I've never heard of CrapCleaner. I might try it just because it has such a good name. I've been using CCleaner for some years now - that's good for all sorts of things, including killing useless Start Ups that I don't need.

kalikshama -> RE: Computer question (need techs here) (5/2/2012 5:20:34 AM)

CCleaner is the new, politically correct, name for CrapCleaner. I've used it for years and love it. Even with my brand spanking new PC, I have to run CCleaner every few days if I've been watching videos, otherwise I'm good for a few weeks.
