When a HDD gets a lot of data added to it, it puts it on sequentially. Then as it tries to use that data it is forced to read different part of the disks to get all of what it's looking for. Do that enough times and it will get noisy. Should run defrag monthly to help prevent this.

HDD will also cache memory if you run a lot of programs at the same time. It will copy data from the RAM to make more room. This can also cause a HDD to chatter as it reads and writes to and from RAM. More RAM will not help this, as Windows is not really well designed to maximize RAM usage. However, you did say you had a second HDD. You can set up that drive to act as the paging file, which will reduce the reading/writing to the primary drive. Look up how to change the size of virtual memory in windows help, it will walk you through that.

CCleaner is the new, politically correct, name for CrapCleaner. I've used it for years and love it. Even with my brand spanking new PC, I have to run CCleaner every few days if I've been watching videos, otherwise I'm good for a few weeks.

Yeah, I have to do the same (XP Pro SP3). I watch a LOT of Netflix stuff (waaay cheaper than cable). I usually end up dumping about 200mb of garbage.

Took the computer in for a free tune up at Staples and it is working better now. There was a bunch of dust on both fans, causing the whirling noise. Tested it a few minutes ago on my game and it's working like a charm. At least I did not have to pay for it.

I am keeping a can of air nearby from now on. Now to clean up my keyboard...

For the past week, my HD has been running rough on Java sites (Pogo and Runescape). When I go to other sites, no 'running' noise. Mom thinks its about to run down, I think it needs more memory (6 gigs). The computer is 2 1/2 years old and I have the latest Java running (6.31). Help me figure this out because I don't want to take it to the shop for repairs (it also has 2 HD, one completely full with Windows 7 and the other having hardly anything).

This is fucking basic:

First, your skabidmit is interfering with your shixwozlot.

And that's the FIRST thing I'd bring to your attention (check your warranty because often....the skabidmit isn't covered if you fuck with it).

Second....(and many overlook this), occasionally your visio device (which can occasionally interfere with your skabidmit) is set to 11. Most people in the know....know that this is entirely ridiculous and (arbitrarily) set their skabidmit to 17 (knowing full well that a setting of 14.73 is capricious but....) well....I believe I've made my point.

Well....indeed.

Reminds me of my first computer. Started not working right, took it into the shop after a few years. They opened it up to discover it was clogged with dog hair. My dog liked the warm air blowing out from it and would lie next to it.

I've never cleaned my keyboards because they are cheaper to replace than buying a can of air! [:D]

At least, so it goes up in the Great White North. Can of air, $7.99. New keyboard, $5.99. Easy choice.

5.99 is way over priced... get over here .........i take mein at less than $3

200 Syrian Pound..
70 SP = $1

Totally agree with ya, ash, but what can I say? Canada charges an average of 150% markup from American prices despite the surge in the value of the Canadian dollar. We just put up with it...like time bombs walking slowly up the clock tower with rifles slung over our shoulders...
