We have a(nother) winner. I'm surprised that this was revealed before the convention.[sm=zipmouth.gif]

Hahahahaha, that was great, thanks! Go Ron Paul!

Lemme get this straight. The GOP votes in a state mean nothing, compared to the votes of the delegates that are supposed to represent the voters but actually will vote for whomever they please? And the Ron Paul campaign is ignoring the voters and simply appealing directly to the delegates?

That appears to be the case in IA as well as other states and the Ron Paul strategy, yes.

This isn't just a Republican thing.

In all caucus states the national convention delegates are not chosen by the caucus votes. the votes we hear about are simply straw polls of the attendees. The real business of the attendees, which Paul is trying to game, is choosing delegates to the state conventions. It is the attendeeds at the state party conventions in caucus states that choose the delegates for the national convention. Some states make their delegates vote for specific candidates on the first ballot (bound delegates) but that isn't universal.

Usually none of this matters because the nomination is wrapped up long before the state conventions get held and everybody gets behind the nominee.

I was going to ask the exact same thing until I read your post, DS. I was just....stunned....that the Republicans will vote for the least voted of the three candiates and thus, ignore the multitudes of people that wanted Mr. Romney or Mr. Santorum for the GOP Nomination. The really funny/sad part of this, is most of those people will do nothing to challenge this. So, its simply to say, they want to bitch at the Democrats but do nothing when their own party screws them of everything INCLUDING their vote.

Well, if I were one of them, I'd either boycott the polls or more likely vote for a third party. And the Obama campaign should be able to get a lot of mileage out of saying that if the GOP is incapable of even representing itself fairly, they have no business trying to run the country.

This will be a tough election for the GOP, and they can't afford insanity.

With three "winners" in Iowa, I'm guessing that their nominating process needs improvement. I'm thrilled to see Dr. Paul win a few states, but it feels like a hollow victory when the the straw polls seem to be following a different election than the delegate count.
