What would you do with your dog(s) if there was a tornado warning and you didn't have a safe basement or storm shelter? I don't consider our mini basement/crawl space safe. It's very shallow, has 2 tall windows, is too small to get very far away from those windows, and is right under the kitchen and its heavy appliances. As soon as the tornado warning was issued last night, we went up the street to the closest public shelter but we felt terrible for leaving our puppies behind. Even in a crate they bark when around people and most public shelters don't allow loudly barking puppies.

Shelters will either allow pets or they won't. I very much doubt shelters that allow pets have any "loudly barking puppy" rules.

If you don't have a shelter near you that allows pets, it's on you to create such a shelter for them or you probably shouldn't have them in the first place.

Put shutters inside the windows so you can make the crawl space usable.
But in the meantime, call your vet and ask them which shelters allow pets.

If there is no other shelter, the safest place is an interior room, closet or hallway with no windows. We don't have a basement and there are no public shelters in our area. We also have windows in every room. When the sirens start, we shut all the bedroom/bathroom doors and gather in the hall. The kids, both furry and not, sit on the floor of the linen closet as an extra safety measure.

Personally, I would never leave my dog behind - he goes where I go, no exceptions. However, if you have no other option, then crate your pet in a room or other area away from any windows or heavy objects. Cover the crate with a heavy blanket or sleeping bag for extra protection.

If you own your home, build a storm shelter. If you do not own your home, move to a house that has a basement. No one should live here in tornado alley without shelter. I am notoriously unimpressed with storm warnings and will probably end up like Dorothy some day. Last night, just as the weather was getting ramped up, I went to bed and slept soundly all night.

If I ever should feel it wise to take shelter, and I am at home, I guarantfuckintee, my three girls will be there with me. It's a running joke that, given the time, I would likely bring the horses into the basement also......it is possible with a walk out basement.

How does your pup react to a blanket being put over his/ her crate? This is calming for many dogs who get barky while being crated.

Another option is to better socialize your dog by taking him/ her to the park, etc. and getting it used to strangers coming around.

With the crazy tornado season we had last year, you got puppies with OUT considering what you were going to do during a "take shelter" warning? How did you prep your bug-out bags with out including them? No, lemme guess. You do NOT have bug-out bags for each person in the family, let alone for yourself.

^This^. He is part of my family and I would no more leave him behind than one of my children.
