New Orleans Police Kill Unarmed Man During Pot Raid

Jacob Sullum | March 9, 2012

On Wednesday night a New Orleans police officer shot and killed an unarmed 20-year-old man, Wendell Allen, during a pot raid. Police, who had a search warrant, say they recovered about five ounces of marijuana, bags, digital scales, and a handgun from the house. They arrested two men for possession with intent to distribute. Allen, a former high school basketball star who was given a five-year suspended sentence for that offense last year, escaped charges this time around, what with being dead and all. The New Orleans Police Department is investigating why Officer Josh Colclough shot Allen, whose mother told a local TV station:

His police title, that's just a title. He's still a man just like the next man that commits a murder. So my child's crime should be treated the same if he'd gotten killed by a regular man.

what about this kid gunned down by POLICE?

and this kid gunned down by POLICE?

Tonight on AC360: Unarmed black vet shot by police

The call for help was not unusual. A 68-year-old veteran with a heart condition had tripped a medical alert device he keeps around his neck in the early hours of a winter morning. The company that services the device informed a 911 operator the device had been triggered and asked for an ambulance to go to the address.

But police arrived at Kenneth Chamberlain's apartment first. And hours later Chamberlain was dead, not from his heart condition, but from two bullets fired by White Plains, NY police officer Anthony Carelli.

Now Kenneth Chamberlain’s family has joined civil rights activists alleging this case raises similar questions to that of Trayvon Martin who was shot dead by a neighborhood watch volunteer: Do police or civilians trying to enforce the law shoot first and ask questions later when they are dealing with African Americans?

For this sort of thing there has always been outrage, and lots of news about it. Nice cave you got there.

My petition thread didn't get much traction. Petition: Justice for a 68 year old marine shot to death in his home

I think that seriously begs the question why the HUGE runkas when a private person shoots another unarmed private person and the screaming silence when the police blow some unarmed person away?

Whats up with that? Is this some kind of attack on individuals?

Like its ok if the gubafia does it bit not if a private person does it?

Whats up with this anyway?

Have you heard about the chipman murders in Knoxville?

Yeah, let me get you some of that....http://www.knoxnews.com/videos/detail/chipman-murders-channon-christian-chris-newsom/

It's not just racial, as much as I would love to support that theory, it's everywhere. The police are like nazis, and the government lets them do it.

Stop bitching and start a revolution.

but the people here are nazis as well for not only letting it go on but condoning it!

This thread is really telling a much larger story, that it is the government attacking rights of individuals and protecting their own!

look at the private man attention versus when the cops do it.

If that isnt a slap in our faces eh....

Police aren't "vigil antes" (vigilantes), they are sworn peace officers who carry badges. Big difference.

Shouldn't the headline read "Habitual offender shot by police"? Even your own article says he was busted once already for the same offense. Guess he didn't learn his lesson and continued his criminal ways.

Unarmed my ass. From your own link:

Yeah. He came toward them "with knives in hand" only after they'd broken into his apartment!! What right did the police have to break into a private citizen's home?? And don't give me any of those "woulda, coulda, shoulda" crap because the medical alert company had called the police after the device had been activated. The man told them through the door that he didn't need any help, everything was fine and they should have listened to him. Instead, they broke into a private residence without cause and blew an innocent man away.

I hope prohibition returns to the states.
Then we can read headlines. He had 5 bottles of vodka in the house and a gun.
He was arrested before for being drunk and selling shots of vodka.
He was stupid enough to keep drinking and continue his life of crime...

Sounds peachy.[:D]

Seriously? How...delusional. I see people with your mentality get tazed on Cops all the time.

There was a 911 call/dispatch, the cops cannot leave a scene until they check things out for themselves. This has been shon on numerous episodes of Cops. When they've been called, they're coming no matter what. And when someone comes at them with weapons, they get taken down hard, sometimes fatally.

SternSkipper -> RE: New Orleans Police Kill Unarmed Man During Pot Raid REASON.TV VIDEO:Katherine (4/16/2012 7:52:17 PM)

It's funny... almost the exact opposite is happening along the southern border of NH .... In three recent events it was the cops each time that were disadvantaged.
In the most recent episode, about 30 miles from my house, a total wingnut/steroid dealer (there is evidence apparently that there was a definite reason there were 5 different towns loosely surrounding the UNH Campus among the killed and wounded). The saddest thing at all was that Greenland's Chief was killed and the guy had EIGHT days to go on his career.
The guy <the shooter> was a very weird dude. He tried all over to ingratiate himself with local fire depts and had been turned down all over the place. One of the guys who crews on a herring boat down here lives in Greenland about a mile away and he's the guy who described the dude as a "wingnut" and when I asked what he meant he said he was up in arms about govt intrusions and had a pretty weird pick for president in November... Weird considering what it would take to make him the GOP candidate anyway.
Yesterday apparently, there was a home invasion that involved a huge search of multiple towns and apparently the suspect was considered very dangerous.
And like 3 weeks ago, a Manchester cop got shot during some kind of call unexpectedly. I'll tell you... It's getting mighty weird just up the road in the land of "Ya cont git to dayah from heyah".
