Even Ronald Reagan would be considered too far left for the current wingnuts who almost dominate the Republican Party. Mitt Romney or all this many faults is sane, he may be the last sane Republican nominee for a while.

You the Child have no idea what we're talking about. You're just babbling. Have you even heard of Goldwater before? Eisenhower reluctantly let The Family hold their Breakfast in the White House, because he felt he owed them his election in part, but it was a terrible precedent. Reagan's embrace of Jerry Falwell was my breaking point, turning me away from independent to Democrat only because they were the only realistic option to slowing that disturbing trend--which has only gotten worse and worse since they sainted Ronnie, along with his failed policies. Government in the 70s did exactly as Goldwater says--they bickered, but then they met, worked out compromises, and the business of government proceeded. Today's uncompromising stance has stopped the process, and the only tool is obstruction.

And what did you say that contradicts rather than supports what I said? Oh, and yes me the Child has heard of Goldwater before, me the Child holds a Master's degree in history. You the Grumpy Old Man have made that age old mistake common to Grumpy Old Men the world over (and Grumpy Old Women too -- mustn't discriminate), equating youth with ignorance and so showing your own.

If that's all you have to add with a Master's degree in history, then the educational system is deteriorating even faster than I thought. Vague platitudes in place of critical thinking. The new history.

Goldwater could stand toe-to-toe with Kahmeni or Kim Il for blistering, blowholing rhetoric, but was at his core a reasonable and decent man with the ability to find common ground in the realism of the world. I remember he sort of hid out from Wm Buckleys run for Mayor in that he thought he was a little to religious. Ah, well....that's about all I got for this one.

What's interesting is that Goldwater was the Right Wing of the Republican Party, Mr. Conservative. Even selling their souls isn't the real harm here. Soul-Sellers would still deal to get things done. What we have instead is a stubborn insistence on "my way or nothing." And the problem with that isn't childishness, but that it prevents governance. Without the ability to consider and balance interests, the only options are attaining sole power or obstructing all actions not entirely in line with their vision. That's just never going to work, whatever people are put into that flawed system. Religion is the excuse for this one. If it weren't religion, we'd all jointly ridicule them for the unreasonable position and elect others. Instead, wrapped in the mantle of pseudo-religion, they've been able to justify what just isn't justifiable, logically or practically. It can only leave dysfunction as long as it lasts.

Gerald Ford was a moderate Republican. Today, he'd be an Independent. William F. Buckley Jr. used to be the voice of the conservatives. An intelligent one at that. Now...intelligence is ridiculed as the enemy. School programs and content are gutted. Intelligent candidates are "out of touch" with voters. Yeah. I'd say.

The unfortunate results of the Republican Party's "Southern Strategy." It gave them some short term success at the polls but they are paying for it now as the religious fundies complete their takeover of the party. The more reasonable Republicans (which, contrary to popular belief, do exist) are beginning to flee the party and go independent. ETA: I don't think you're a child and I don't think there was anything wrong with your post. Just saying.
