Man sentenced after accidentally shooting woman's mohawk he mistook for bird A Colorado man was sentenced to five years' probation after accidentally shooting a woman whose red mohawk he mistook for a fowl that had been harassing his cats. Derrill Rockwell, 49, told police that he grabbed his .22-caliber rifle and set out from his home Oct. 5 to fire at the bird after spotting it at the top of a hill about 90 feet away, the Daily Sentinel reported Friday. "His intent was to spook it away," Deputy District Attorney Jason Conley told District Judge Richard Gurley on Friday, according to the newspaper. But after shooting at the bird, the man said he noticed it didn't fly away and he reported hearing a woman moaning in pain. Rockwell soon discovered that he had shot a 23-year-old woman in the head, mistaking her red mohawk for the menacing bird. Conley reportedly told the judge that the woman may have passed out from alcohol before being shot. Police officers also found a bag of suspected methamphetamine near where she was shot. The woman survived the shooting I'm sure there's a moral here somewhere. K.

No, you can't make that kind of stuff up. Why am I not surprised it happened here in CO where I live?! I moved here about 6 yrs ago, and NEVER have I seen a more disconnected, whackier bunch of bananas. It's like living in a bloody black, negative vortex, I kid you not! Evil & idiocy reigns supreme here (no offense DarkSteven, as you're one of the few sane ones I've met here!). Wanna know what the scariest part is? So many people pack here in this state, and you never know which of those that are packing are the good guys, the bad guys, or the idiots. Lord have mercy on my poor wicked soul.

Lemme see if I got this right. 1/ A (one) BIRD was harassing his cats (plural). Hmmm... 2/ So 'felon in possession' grabbed his gun. Frosty, I haven't seen any kind of red bird around here, ever. I understand there are supposed to be Red-headed Sapsuckers, but they'd certainly be no threat to cats. I'm thinking it's less of a case of a bird being a threat to his cat, and more of a case like that drug head being a threat to society at large.

FF, the only thing I can think of that would be agressive this time of year and could be mistaken for a mohawk would be a wild turkey.

That's the big problem with his story right there, I'd have thought. A bird big enough to frighten cats, but small enough to be mistaken for a mohawk?

Actually, small birds do attack cats. I've seen it. Some of them will dive-bomb the cat with their beaks. Do birds attack cats? Why do birds keep attacking my cat? Aggressive attacks on my cat from a Mockingbird? I've never heard of any specifically red birds doing it, but obviously that doesn't prove that they don't. K.

We had a black cat that would get dive bombed by a group of birds every time he went into the back yard. He was always bringing dead animals home as a 'gift' so I'm guessing he deserved it. Last summer my dog was attacked by 2 Robins, because he had sniffed out one of their babies (guess it had fallen out of the nest) and was trying to use it as a chew toy. Those birds were very persistent and aggressive. Neither of the birds were sporting mohawks though.

My cat trails along after me when I walk the dog,once watched her pounce on a bird(just your typical sparrow type bird,what the fuck do I know I'm a city boy living in the country)that lingered on the ground too long. As I rushed toward the site of the attack,with the intention of shooing away the cat<a second bird swooped in and pecked at my cat...distracting the cat long enough for the first bird to make good it's escape. Coolest think I ever saw,an indignant bird protecting it's mate? So cool

Can someone who has please suggest a bird that might fit the bill? The only red birds I've seen here in CO so far are Cardinals and a reddish black species of Oriole. While Cardinals are shy, Orioles are most definitely not, and I've have several ones I feed in the backyard (with special hummingbird like feeders) who will harass our dog (a German Shepherd mix) to get her away from the feeder area if she happens to be in the backyard.
