I felt like sharing some interesting local/politically based news, and I was thinking it would be nice for other members to share, what is going on in their neck of the woods also.

I will go first:

1. The Mayor of D.C., Mr. Vincent Gray, has stated that he wants to basically cover Washington D.C. with/"red light camera's" from one end of the city,to the other end.

He basically wants them on every corner!
For those of you that aren't familiar with the "red light camera's" in D.C., they are all over the place! According to the news, D.C. is already # 5 in the nation with speed traps and red light camera's.
Evidently, Mayor Gray is on a mission to become the #1 city with speed traps and red light camera's!
Word to the wise, it's best to drive the speed limit in D.C., and be careful where you park also.

Red Light Camera Double Whammy

2. This local news, is especially for fargle.
Congressman Bobby Rush, donned a hoodie during a speech on the House floor, Wednesday in honor of Trayvon Martin.
He was escorted off the House floor, because no hoodies are allowed.

Rep. Bobby Rush dons hoodie on House Floor Wed.

I look forward to hearing some local/politically based news story in your area!
Like Marvin Gay sang, "What's Going On?"

Mari, we've got a load around here.

One local Congressman decided he was too busy (and too important?) to meet with the father of a soldier killed in a "green on blue" attack in Afghanistan, and that father is now mounting a primary challenge that might actually have some legs.

One of our local cities is about to launch an "eye in the sky" electronic monitoring aircraft, with cameras that can be remotely controlled from the Sheriff's station. The Mayor has already had his profile story in the Wall Street Journal, but he's shooting for 60 Minutes.

The city is also involved in a lawsuit by activists, claiming that if the majority of people on a form of federal assistance are members of a minority group, it is automatically racist to enforce the rules of that program. The city is now raising the uncomfortable question of why participation in that program, designed to help everybody, is so overwhelmingly (70%) made up of one particular minority.

Very, interesting local news stories, Rich!
I have a feeling big brother is going to end up "everywhere" even in our bedrooms, one day.
Is there a law that federal assistance programs, should be equally divided among all racial groups, and not based on income, state/federal guidelines, etc.?

It is nice to hear what is going on around the USA, and the world, thank you
for sharing!

Funny you should mention the needs of the community, Mari. The most damning part of the Mayor's charges is that the people on the program were damn-near redlined up here, without the required support infrastructure, without people being advised that local jobs were scarce, that the lower housing costs were offset by very long (and expensive) commutes, that public transportation is very limited. The statistic they are slapping people in the face with is that a black person who needs dialysis will die 10 years earlier up here, than in the LA area.

I'll see if I can find you something on it.

No problemo, drive on down to Maryland, just obey the traffic laws in D.C.
State Senate just voted to expand Maryland gaming, slots, blackjack and table games.
Let's see if the House passes the bill, and what the "people" are going to want/vote for.
Maryland has been struggling with this issue for years.
This will be interesting, if it passes.

MD Senate votes to expand gaming

I would like to read the information if you find it, Rich.

Red-lining? I haven't heard that term in a long time.

Do you think minorities are being red-lined in your community?

Thank you Rich, the times, they are a-changing.

PA Gov. Tom Corbett keeps preaching that we need to do more with less money. His most recent budget strips millions of dollars from health and human services alone. And yet, he signed a voter ID law earlier this month that will cost my state $11 million to implement. And poll workers, who largely volunteer their time of 11-15 hours for a small stipend will face fines of up to $1,000 and/or 1 year in jail plus the loss of their own voting rights for 4 years---even if it is a family member or some other person known to the poll worker!! That is for each instance of a poll worker not asking for ID.

Every Democrat and 3 Republicans voted against the measure, yet it still made it through the legislature. Gov. Corbett said, when he signed the bill into law that he is glad to have the opportunity to protect the voting rights of the people of PA. (EH?)

I wish PA had the 'recall' option.

I would think that PA is going to lose many of those poll workers.
Why would people volunteer to do work like that, and risk a fine or jail??
It doesn't seem worth it!

Next, Gov. Corbett is going to lose even more $$$$, because he is going to have
to pay people, more than a stipend, to work at the polls.

This is not making a lot of sense.

The Columbia River Crossing project, which is a new bridge on Interstate 5 has cost 140 million so far for consulting and other costs. After spending all that, they still haven't worked out the basics, like whether it will include light rail and how to pay for it. They did have a design though, until the Coast Guard said it wasn't high enough. Now a professor at my law school is suing to enjoin the project because the EIS for the project should not have been approved until the funding was certain. So, 140 million and no bridge.

What a great story!
140 million for consulting and other costs, and they have not even started on the actual construction of the bridge!!!

140 million gone and no bridge.

There's always some stuff here about mmj. The voters approved an amendment to the state constitution that legalized mmj, and ever since, the legislators have been trying to gut the industry, by passing ridiculous laws. One provision outlawed independent growers, and another imposed zoning restrictions on the grow facilities. Law enforcement has also gone after doctors who prescribed mmj.

The Republican Secretary of State, Scott Gessler, has been zeroing in on election practices, etc., that tend to have partisan impacts. Naturally, his actions have stirred up ugly partisan emotions, and state Dems are attempting to remove him from office.

There's about to be a huge kerfuffle over a fire. State officials were doing a controlled burn, and it went out of control. So far, two people have been killed by the fire, 27 homes were destroyed, and 4000 acres were burned. The smoke affected most of the state, and I could smell it at my house, which was at least 30 miles away. Link.

The only way they could get in trouble is if they don't ask for id. How is that risky? They have been asking for id when you vote here for as long as I can remember and I have never heard of any problems with it.

Then again after reading the two local articles I found for your thread, I am not sure I would be looking here for solutions to anything. For a city that is falling apart the politicians seem to have no problems with throwing away money.

http://www.freep.com/article/20120314/NEWS01/203140395/Bing-closing-graft-filled-Detroit-Department-of-Human-Services

http://www.freep.com/article/20111101/NEWS01/111010375/Detroit-loses-out-9-2-million-help-poor-people

And people wonder why I hate politicians

I am not sure if this response was for me, but I live in the Metro Washington D.C./Maryland/Virginia area.
From my home, I can be in Maryland, Northern Virgina or Washington D.C. in about 25 minutes.
I have never been to Michigan, let alone Detroit, and visiting Detroit is not on my bucket list.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Libertarian Party members are set to nominate former television reality series star Rupert Boneham as their candidate for Indiana governor.

Libertarian officials say the winner of 2004's "Survivor: All-Stars" is unopposed for the party's nomination during its state convention on Saturday in Indianapolis. The tie-dye wearing Boneham won $1 million on the TV show and donated some of it to his Rupert's Kids charity, which provides mentoring and job-training to at-risk youths.

Boneham will face Republican Mike Pence and Democrat John Gregg in the governor's race.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels said Wednesday that he shares police groups' concerns that some people might misinterpret a new law that lays out when residents could be legally justified in using force against police officers.

Daniels said he thought carefully before signing the bill Tuesday night. The legislation was passed by strong majorities in the House and Senate in response to public uproar after the state Supreme Court ruled last year that residents couldn't resist officers even during an illegal entry.

"Contrary to some impressions, the bill strengthens the protection of Indiana law enforcement officers by narrowing the situations in which someone would be justified in using force against them," Daniels said in a written statement. But, he added: "What is troubling to law enforcement officers, and to me, is the chance that citizens hearing reports of change will misunderstand what the law says."

The law took immediate effect.

This bill didn't affect me very much since I don't serve warrants, or go on raids, but Daniels got it right IMO

While I was out-of-state, Massachusetts decriminalized marijuana so there are civil penalties instead of criminal. Now there is an effort to legalize medical marijuana.

There is also an effort to expand the bottle bill so water bottles and others become returnable as well.

My ex state of Florida wants to be able to dye chicks and bunnies and I have a link to a petition against this in Off Topic.

You're in luck, everybody!!! You can now buy Illinois lottery tickets on-line!! I believe we are the first state to do this. Step right up one and all!!

Minor hijack -

I was listening to a Dave Ramsey podcast last night. He said it makes absolute sense that one of the 5 most messed up state economies is offering this now. He went on to say that:
- only the poor play the lotteries
- the money is used for scholarships to fund middle class and rich kids
- he considers it a "tax" on the poor.

The comment about the id was in response to your post about id, specifically the part I quoted. The links were in response to your op asking for local news. I thought that is what you were looking for.

As to the articles on red lights, it seems simple. Don't run them and you won't get a ticket.
