JetBlue flight diverted to Texas after ‘incoherent’ captain subdued

He "went to a restroom, then emerged, shouting, 'Iraq, al-Qaida, terrorism,
we're all going down," the paper reported. The captain, whose name has not
been released, was "removed from the aircraft and taken to a local medical facility," JetBlue said.

And someone got a video. I'll bet Jetblue would have paid a good price for it.

Well, I could not hear or see anything of interest on either video in your link. Obviously the guy had some kind of breakdown.

RICHMOND HILL, Ga. — "A JetBlue Airways captain who sprinted through the cabin of a Las Vegas-bound flight screaming about terrorists, Jesus and Sept. 11 was charged Wednesday with interfering with a flight crew, federal authorities said. Captain Clayton Osbon told his co-pilot that "things don't matter" shortly after JetBlue Flight 191 from New York departed Tuesday, according to an affidavit.

Court documents say Osbon told the plane's first officer that "we're not going to Vegas" and began what he described as a sermon. "The (first officer) became really worried when Osbon said `we need to take a leap of faith,'" according to the sworn affidavit given by an FBI agent. "Osbon started trying to correlate
completely unrelated numbers like different radio frequencies, and he talked about sins in Las Vegas."

Passengers wrestled Osbon to the ground after he left the cockpit and later sprinted down the cabin yelling and urging everyone to pray. The plane made an emergency landing in Amarillo, Texas. No one on
board was seriously hurt. The charges against Osbon, 49, were filed in Texas. The resident of
Richmond Hill, Ga., was being held Wednesday at Northwest Texas Healthcare System in Amarillo
and remains under a medical evaluation."

The sad thing is that no one is thinking about the reality that while yes, this could have ended tragically different, there really isn't a question that this man, for some reason unbeknownst to any of us, suffered some sort of psychological break and probably had no control over what happened.

I'm truly glad that no one was hurt, but my heart goes out to this pilot. Can you imagine how this respected pilot who was a consumate professional all those years is going to feel once doctors get him stabilized?

Yes, it is wonderful the first mate had the presence of mind to get him out of the cockpit and to change the security code, but...isn't that part of his job, keeping everyone as safe as possible. It is a testament to him that he was able to maintain his cool and do that.

I hope that the final outcome of this is that the captain receives either a suspended sentence or the bare minimum that could be given. No, he should not be allowed to fly commercially anytime soon, but his years of experience can still be useful to the airline once he is stabilized. I sincerely hope that this incident does not completely destroy his life.

What a thoughtful post this is on your part. There are a lot of
interesting aspects to this incident precisely because it is so unusual.
You put aside all the legal, sensational and hypothetical and made the choice
to focus on the humanity of the one who turned out to be the primary victim.

The legal ramifications are really irrelevant. The sensationalism the media presents it with might make some people worry about flying.

From the legal standpoint, there really isn't going to be much question this man had a psychological break. While it is unlikely to get him off with zero repurcussions, the punishment is likely to be minimal. Thankfully, by that time, the media will no longer be interested and the outcome won't be reported, because we both know that if they did, there were be a big deal made out of his lack of "punishment." People won't be capable of considering what this man has lost.

Don't get me wrong, I'm going to be flying a lot at the end of the year on an extended trip, and I pray have airline personnel that can keep it together the way the first mate in this situation did. The last thing I need is a pilot having a breakdown over the Atlantic ocean.

Apparently, few people here seem to be interested in the story at all.
