Has the Sexual Revolution Been Good for Women? No

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304724404577297422171909202.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

Maybe the woman is speaking for herself?[8|]

Nice try.....just more non-issues disguised as relevant but meant to distract.....like the "they want stuff for free" bullcrap, meant to distract from real issues.

Cons still don`t get that they missed this one and the ship has sailed.

At this point,we can`t even get conservatives to be honest about what feminism is/was......I doubt we`ll ever get them to be honest about the "sexual revolution" is/was either.

This piece is proof of that.

Nice specious myths she's put up there.

As a feminist, I've never made any of those ridiculous statements/myths.

Well, I guess you just made the case for myth #1. [:D]

I am truly astonished by the hostility towards feminism that has popped up in these recent contraception and abortion debates. Everyone from Bush SR to Romney used to support planned parenthood, now they demonize it. The Repubs even used to have platforms that could be considered supporive of women's rights, now it is just the opposite.
I had always thought feminism was about the ability to make choices. I chose to get a degree and have a career while raising kids, my sister chose to be a stay at home mom, but is every bit as much a feminist as me. I have experienced some hostility about my choice from other women over the years, but I assumed it was isolated. Now, all of a sudden, I am a feminazi. How did that happen?

They complain about shit? That's the big evidence?

Yes, women, bless their tiny Black hearts, turn out to be complex human beings, and will probably never be happy no matter what they do - which means they should shut up and do what they're told, then at least half the human race can be happy.

It's bullshit though, married women have much higher rates of depression and mental illness, and die younger, - and not from having too much fun, making it all a human rights issue, even without all the attendant externalities, like forced childbirth and faith-based, fantasy healthcare.

I can see that just from looking at faces in the supermarket - the grimmest looking women are the Hispanic Catholic with a half dozen kids in tow. The guys look pretty smug though.

Oddly, that's kind of reversed when it comes to White Baptists: the women range from happy to harpy (a lot of them have health problems from repeated childbirths, back problems are common), but the men almost uniformly look like Auschwitz inmates shuffling to the ovens.

Gad, I can't even imagine the bills, I've got Two and it's endless.

All I can say, I will be extremely happy when the pendulum swings back the other way.

I think Hannah Rosin refuted it handily.

Good article

The lingering ambivalence about sexuality is linked, I think, to women's lingering ambivalence about the confusing array of identities available to them in modern life. Studies do indeed show that women are no more happy than they were in the 1970s. But the most likely explanation for that is an excess of choice. Women now compete with men in so many different arenas, and more arenas means more ways to lose. But that does not mean that women want to go back to an age before the pill any more than they want an age before the washing machine.

I attribute this:

What of the fact, widely reported earlier this week, that 26% of American women are on some kind of mental-health medication for anxiety and depression and related problems?

To this:

Questionable Advertising of Psychotropic Medications and Disease Mongering

...Such bioreductionistic and highly arguable advertisements for psychiatric treatments imply much about the disorder they are licensed for. As Dr. Healy suggests, consumers who view such advertisements are likely to characterize their problems in a manner congruent with industry promotion and to request well-advertised pharmaceuticals as treatment. At a bare minimum, increased medicalization will result; in some cases, disease mongering may indeed be an appropriate characterization.

Such consumer advertising is only possible in the absence of vigorous government regulation [ 8] or outcry from professional associations. We hypothesize that their combined silence significantly contributes to the process of disease mongering.

Good Gawd!

The writer of this opinion piece has it all wrong. From the very paragraph in which she states: "national "war on women" is afoot." There is no national war on women, only a GOP war. That some women who are in the GOP are happy little soldiers in this war is sad, but ultimately does not prove the nonexistence of said war.

Not sure what you mean here?

I do agree with a lot of points in the article on effects of various choices on certain issues. But, I am not totally against feminism either. If it weren't for feminists we wouldn't be able to vote, or have a job. I don't believe that God intended for women to only sit home and take care of the house and babies.

I also believe that some men have taken the verses on men being head of household and submission and used them as an excuse to abuse and neglect and treat their women like a lower life form. We are not a lower life form! We are beautiful and intelligent and by george we have a lot to offer the world! I believe that all women have their own special beauty that is theirs alone. Each one of us ladies are made beautiful and unique with our own set of talents and gifts which makes us the only one of us there is on the planet. And we were each made so wonderful to only sit at home and have babies and clean the house? I don't think so.

We have our talents and gifts and feminine charms for a reason, because we have something to contribute to society. Although, I do believe in submission to my future husband and am devoting myself to that complete submission, I have learned from some old friends of mine this last week that submission doesn't mean you are weak or are totally out of control. It also doesn't mean that you can't have an opinion or a voice of your own. I really do believe in a woman's right to choose for herself what path she will take, and I also believe in being able to voice what our beliefs are to others as well.

Even if we don't all agree on abortion, or being gay, or whatever issue, and strongly believe what we believe, at least we are still given a choice. That is why as beings we have FREE WILL. Free will means we get to choose our path. I think that is one major issue that the feminists have brought about, the ability to choose and not be restricted or forced to do one thing or another. If we are being forced to take birth control or being forced to not take birth control, or being forced to be gay or not gay, or what have you, that is taking away our free will. We are not made to be robots. We are made to be our own unique us. And even if I don't agree with a person's choice to be gay or their choice to have an abortion, I don't have a right to deny that person the right to make the choice. I can state my opinion, they state theirs, and then we each go on and make our choices for ourselves based on our opinions and beliefs.

How so?

Myth No. 1: The "war on women" consists of tyrannical men arrayed against oppressed but pluckily united women.
