I loved Mr. Roger's Neighborhood when I was a kid. My sisters, who were (and, not surprisingly, still are) a few years older than me, considered him boring. They would try to change the channel but I yell and smack and kick them (and we had a nice set of encyclopedias that made great throwing objects) until I had driven them out of the room. Nothing, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, was going to stand between me and the nice man who was teaching me how to be a gentler, kinder person.

My parents were not terribly interested in raising their children even when they were sober. A lot of who I am was formed watching Mister Rogers and Sesame Street.

He annoyed me as a kid, he annoyed me when I had small kids watching him, and he still annoys me.

I preferred "The Muppets" and old cartoons.

The results will depend upon exactly where you poke.

He was one of those "evil Christians" and should be hated for his beliefs; just like other Christians.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

If a christian is indeed evil, I would assume it would be all of the other christians hating on him for messing up their image and all.

He is one of the Christians that, IMO, actually embody the message of Jesus. He walked the walk, rather than just spouting off platitudes, and so on. Like my Grandfather. He practiced what Jesus preached, and (regardless if you believe the bible or not, whether you think Jesus was a fiction or not) they both lived according to those teachings.

Of course, I can't say that with 100% certainty about Mr. R, but I sure can about my Grandfather. My Grandfather is the standard by which I measure all other self-professed Christians.

Few that I know, or even have met, come close.

That's awesome Greedy.

Something I have noticed in my life.......most of the people that walk the walk, rarely talk the talk. Quite a few of them rarely if ever, attended a church service.

my Grandfather was a lay preacher in his church, as well as a VERY active choir member. He was also part of the bell choir (god, I love bell choirs!!)
However... I will not say he was representative, nor will I say he was an exception. My sample population (to sound all official and such) doesn't give me the data to say.

all I know is HE is still a presence in my life, despite his passing more than 20 yrs ago.

I also know that I fail to measure up to his hopes for me (and I also knowthat he wouldn't judge me for that).

to me, THAT is what being a Christian is about.

live love don't judge forgive accept (my grandfather was the only professed Christian I knew in my childhood that had no issues with GLB folks -back then, the TG thing wasn't as OUT), and I credit him and my Mom for informing my attitudes now towards people who "are not me".

When I was a little girl in Brownies we went to see Mr. Roger's show being done in Pittsburgh, PA.  Little did I realize that I was seeing a TV icon.

Yes, I am crazy about feathered creatures. I have a dozen chickens, 3 ducks, 5 geese, and 2 parakeets.

Revise that number. Just got 14 new chicks and 5 turkeys.

In my experience, many of the most "christian" people I've met would never make a big deal of it, and a fair number of them hadn't been inside a church for years. Beliefs don't necessarily come attached to visiting a building, and reasonable, moral actions don't happen to only those who proclaim they do.

I loved Mr. Rogers. And my kids loved him.

A few weeks ago, some of the guys at work were watching an old episode of "I Want to be a Millionaire". One of the questions had to do with car thieves returning a stolen car to the exact place they'd taken it from with a note of apology on the windshield. I knew immediately it was Mr. Rogers.

I found a mention of it: http://articles.cnn.com/2008-07-28/living/mf.mrrogers.neighbor_1_mr-rogers-neighborhood-fred-rogers-koko-tv-station?_s=PM:LIVING

I knew he was a ordained minister but I don't believe
he was ever the pastor of a church.
I knew he was teased as a kid and the
story behind the sneakers. I didn't know
he was a vegetarian.
There a lot of ways to be a Christian and
all sorts of people who identify as Christians
You can be a Christian and not follow
the doctrines of a sect or attend church.
Tolerance and acceptance and caring
about one another were messages
of the show.
I loved the show growing up and still
do. He was just so calm. Only Bob Ross
could compete with him in the television
to mellow out with stakes.
And I loved those puppets.

Yes, but if one is smart, one does not stroke a pussycat's fur the wrong way. Unless, of course, one happens to be a masochist.
