Is THIS Why They are Celibate? TODAY IN HISTORY Mar 17, 965 Pope Leo VIII dies of a stroke during sexual intercourse. Perhaps the best way for a man to die, but not a very appropriate choice for the Bishop of Rome.

FR When the Catholic Church speaks of celibacy, they are talking about not getting married, not an absence of sex. Not having sex is called abstinence in their world. A celibate priesthood is a discipline of the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church. Many Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church have married priests.

Plus priests were allowed to marry back in 965. The change came some time later because priests were leaving their money to their heirs not to the church.

These days the RC clergy is supposed to abstain and be celibate...they usually manage one of those.

Then you must be Catholic, maybe diocesan. I did 5 year in the OFM.

I replied priest of circumstance.
