HBO Cancels Luck for Its Authenticity By Alyssa Bereznak[[image]http://www.vanityfair.com/online/oscars/2012/03/hbo-cancels-luck-three-horses-die/_jcr_content/par/cn_contentwell/par-main/cn_blogpost/cn_float_container/cn_image.size.luck-cancelled.jpg[/image]

It’s a sad day for Dustin Hoffman fans and horse girls everywhere[/link]. In a tragic and incredibly meta plot twist, HBO has announced the cancellation of its latest prime-time drama, Luck, after a third horse died on-set yesterday.[/link]

The horse’s demise came after she “reared, flipped over backwards and struck her head on the ground,” while filming on the Santa Anita horse track in California. After returning to her stall, she was later euthanized, according to HBO.

“While we maintained the highest safety standards possible, accidents unfortunately happen and it is impossible to guarantee they won’t in the future,” HBO said in a statement.

The network’s horse-death rate is much lower than that of the Santa Anita racetrack, where at least 11 horses died
[/link] during training and racing last season. This isn’t the first time that a captivating HBO series has blurred the lines between gripping television and sad, real-life hardships. Just last year, Felicia “Snoop” Pearson—who played a terrifying androgynous Baltimore gangster in The Wire—was detained in a marijuana-and-heroin-ring bust.

It's unfortunate to me, that most people haven't a clue what a race horse's life is actually like.

I am a hypocrite, I love watching races but I hate horse racing.

Racing thoroughbreds are very fragile, very high strung, and very difficult animals at times. It was a great series, but I'm glad that HBO has decided that they can't do it in a manner that is safe for the horses and is canceling the show.

Many breeds of horses would be fragile (if asked to do what they do at the age they do it), high strung (if kept in a box stall most of their lives) and difficult to handle (see two previous points).

Horse racing is a rough life for horses. I learned to ride on retired racehorses, and those are some batshit animals.

I'm a bit of a hypocrite to. I hate horse racing
but see the thrill and beauty of it.
This horse being killed is to me serious
stuff. In the early days of Hollywood there
weren't any laws to protect and animal
and a lot were killed. There's no reason
for dogs or horses to die so humans
can be entertained.
The producers blew it and a horse died.
HBO doesn't want to gamble on it
happening again.
The cancellation of Luck is also karmic
retribution on Milch for bailing on
Deadwood.

What do viewers of Luck think of it? I had a hard time following it. I'm only up to episode 3 - NO SPOILERS!

Iamsemisweet -> RE: R.I.P, pretty horses (3/15/2012 5:20:36 PM)

I feel the same way.  I don't follow racing closely, but I know that it is disastrous for the horses, since so many demands are placed on their bodies when they are still immature.  It is a tough life.

My cousin was in the quarter horse racing industry.  He got suspended for drugging, and Bob Baffert took over his license.  Apparently,  having to deal with my asshole cousin was one of the reasons that Baffert switched to thoroughbred racing.

Horse racing is a cruel "sport". So is Greyhound racing. I don't support, either. Hurts me to watch, in fact. I'm glad HBO cancelled.

Agreed.

The horses is what I like to see when it comes to horse racing. I agree it's not humane the way they treat them and what they do when the horses are no longer useful to the sport.

I have had horses most of my childhood growing up. I was raised on a Hereford cattle ranch in Texas. I'd rather see my horses happy and well cared for.

I do admit that Walter Farley's The Black Stallion series was a very favorite series of mine. I am a horse fanatic and have loved horses since I could talk though and have always devoured everything and anything to do with horses.

As for the show, I have never seen it but I would love to watch it for the horses. I am very saddened to learn that those horses died during the making of it though and those deaths are not worth having the show in my opinion. I'd rather those horses had lived so they could be enjoyed more and sacrificed having the show. I'm glad they canceled it so that no other horses will die during its making.

I think its safe to say that most every aspect of how thoroughbred racing is done (breeding, training etc.) is sure to cause bad outcomes for the horses.
