The Bottle Bill is Massachusetts' most successful recycling program, but it doesn't cover many types of bottles. One billion bottles a year still end up as litter or trash. That's enough bottles to fill Fenway Park to the Monster seats. These bottles could be recycled if we updated the Bottle Bill to include water, sports drink, iced tea, and other beverage containers.

We have until March 21 to urge the committee to send the Bottle Bill to the House floor. As Speaker of the Massachusetts House, Robert DeLeo has the power to move the Updated Bottle Bill to a vote.

That's why I [Nathan Proctor] created a petition to Speaker DeLeo on SignOn.org, which says:

As the Speaker of the Massachusetts House, please bring the Updated Bottle Bill to the floor for a vote.

That's one thing that really bothered me about Florida - no bottle bill at all. On busy days at the nude beach, the trash cans would overflow with bottles and cans, which end up in landfills, and in some counties, the ocean, destroying the reef >_<

Believe it or not, RI and Massachusetts have led the way in many ways with regard to protection environmental law. Particularly when it comes to water. Save The Bay in RI is probably one of the very first 'environmental groups to actually get anything done. It's about time these modifications came.

Okay, I'm not saying you're wrong (actually not saying that Nathan Proctor is wrong), but how can a Bottle Bill not cover all bottles?

What's the wording in the bill that prevents all bottles from being covered?

What beverages and containers are subject to the law?

Glass, plastic, metal, aluminum and bi-metal containers holding beer and other malt beverages, carbonated soft drinks and mineral waters are subject to the law. Legally, all must carry a deposit label before they are sold.

What beverages and containers are exempt from the law?

Wine, dairy products, natural fruit juices, non-carbonated drinks, and alcoholic beverages other than beer and malt beverages are exempt from the law. Any container(s) greater than two gallons in size also are exempt, regardless of product type.

Thanks for that clarification. Any idea why they would make that distinction? Do you recall any of the discussions surrounding that? It seems pretty f-ing stupid to me, but, I do allow for them to actually have a good reason.

Yeah D... when the original bottle law was enacted, it was in the 70s. And there was HUGE opposition from beverage companies. You would have thought it was a presidential campaign from all the negative ads. In the end what Kali posted to you was passed. A mere shadow of what was originally asked for by public interest groups in Mass. Guess who the biggest opponents have been ever since. Bottled water companies where the "beverage" is marketed primarily by single serving.
I personally think that it's 'risky' to do so with gallon sized milk abd water... I think a better biodegradability scheme is probably a better route to take with those packages.

I never understood the logic behind that when MI went to returnables. A can is a can no matter what was in it before you threw it out.

My biggest problem with that one was when I would come back to MI to visit the family. It used to take a couple of days before I stopped getting yelled at for throwing my cans away.
