Status: offline 		For years, in fact ever since business school in Boston, I've gone to the same barber. We have always had an excellent relationship, but he seems to have gone out of business and not only could I not get an answer at his old number but I can't even get an answer at the concierge's desk in the hotel where he had a shop. I am past due for a haircut so I got a recommendation from a neighbor for a trendy salon where I have an appointment on Wednesday.

Here's my dilemma, boys and girls: With my old barber, I tipped him very generously in three lump sums per year. This was a super arrangement for all parties involved. I don't know the man who will be cutting my hair next week but I have looked at pictures and he is one of those guys who wears a lot of neon and has poofy hair and that usually means "temperamental." If I try to tip him right after he cuts my hair, is he going to get offended as an "artiste" and refuse to see me again? Or if I don't offer to tip him right after since we don't have the kind of longstanding arrangement I had with my old guy will he assume I am stiffing him and give me a bad haircut next time? Either way I don't want to look like a clueless dork. I just want to know what the tipping arrangement is like these days.

Status: offline 		Tip himm immedeatly after your haircut. These artists work on tips, they don't reject them. Tip him and complement him to stroke his ego, and it should go fine for cut 2, as well.

Status: offline 		Before you get out of the chair, look in the mirror to be certain you have exactly the haircut you expect. Don't be afraid to speak up as he is cutting your hair. If something doesn't look right to you, say so! Remember you are the boss, he is working for you at that time.

After, and assuming you are satisfied with the job he has done, then yes, go ahead and tip. Assuming you follow the advice above and and still end up with an unsatisfactory cut then I would only pay the going rate with no tip. I would not reward bad service.

Status: offline 		Tip him when you pay and quit judging him by his pictures. Being on a site like this should have cured you of that by now. Now of the best hair stylists I've gone to wore poofy outrageous colors. And no one paid more attention to my hair than the gay man I saw.

Status: offline 		I would tip him at the completion of his work and I'm sorta puzzled at why you are concerned that he might be offended by that since that is most likely the norm under which he works. The lump sum tipping arrangement - is that common? Never heard of it before except for maybe the traditional Christmas tip/gift one might give to a letter carrier or newspaper delivery person.

I'm surprised this is even a question.  Do you want to be paid for your work now or 'three times a year'?

Who cares about the pictures? Did he do a good job on your head?  That's how you call this.

Status: offline 		The problem is I happen to care a lot about my hair and here in the states we have an imperfect system where people like hair stylists can take their revenge if they're not tipped properly. Sometimes it feels like reverse tyranny or class warfare.

In that case, tip him properly if you are pleased with your haircut, thus ensuring he will not seek revenge on your precious follicles the next time you need to look purdy.

If you are not happy with his work, don't tip properly. You matter so much that he will lie awake at night, plotting and planning....but you can really jack him off by going to a different stylist.


He will NEVER forgive you....

Probably - for all I know.... What about over your northern border? Anyway, is it not possible that your minimum wage is held artifically low because of an expectation of tipping?

About 15 or more years ago, an American fast-food chain (Big Al's? - or sumptin similar) set up here to give us even more of the great American experience.... And they did just that - promoted the tipping culture and converesely chose to pay the mostly young service staff less than the industry award wage. Took the relevant government authority all of a week to shut that practise down.... ie, they were fine with promoting tipping, but the company's still legally obliged to pay the award.

You can tip here if you want, but it's not expected as some right of passage. When the taxi metre says $21.50, you're *expected* to pay $21.50. Seems a simpler, better system to me, anyways....

I care about my hair and general appearance, too. Only last night I gave myself a fresh No2 all over, up top. The el cheapo home trim set cost $19.95 (no tip) some 4 years ago and figuring once a month cut, that's currently about 40c a time - and dropping....

Anxiety free, too - yorta reconsider your options....

The federal minimum wage is something like $7.85 (correct me if I'm wrong, folks, I haven't worked minimum wage in a long time). Last year, my son delivered pizzas for which he got paid $3.85 an hour plus $.50 per mile plus tips. Yes, tips are expected because food service workers and other people in certain "industries" actually have to live on those tips. Back when I waited tables in the '80s I made $2.50 an hour plus tips, didn't have to put all kinds of wear and tear on my car (like my son had to in order to deliver pizzas) and back then the minimum wage was more than $4.00 less than it is now. So today, those tips are needed even more than ever.

Status: offline 		Being a stylist, we appreciate tips when you pay. And we also appreciate the truth about your cut, style etc. So don't be afraid to tell us.

Tip your waitress
Tip your bartender
Tip your stylist
Tip your tattoo artist
Tip your dancer (after a dance or on stage)
Tip the bell boy
Tip your dealer (casino)

If there is anything else I forgot, I'm sorry. But these are people I would tip.
