ShibsStories -> Silence Gun (3/3/2012 8:42:37 AM)

Bit of a weird, bulky looking thing as it is now- but I doubt it will take them long to slim it down. Anyone else a little creeped out at the potential uses, or can you just not wait to get one for use one your kids/subs/those damn (noisy group here)?
Do you think law enforcement should be allowed to purchase and use them?

The article:

Ever since humans first invented guns, they've been inventing new uses for them. Some shoot bullets; others shoot lasers. But a strange and unsettling new gun being developed by Japanese researchers shoots sound waves in an effort to disrupt and silence anyone who dares speak out of turn.

The gun operates based on the concept of delayed auditory feedback. An attached microphone picks up the sound being made by the target and plays it back 0.2 seconds later. The effect is incredibly confusing to the human brain, making it all but impossible to talk or hold a conversation. The device doesn't cause the person it's being used on any physical harm — it simply messes with their head.

When the human brain hears its own speech perfectly in sync during normal speech, it easily processes the input and allows you to largely ignore the sound of your own voice. However, by offsetting the response just a bit, the brain hears your mouth speaking as well as the strange echo effect produced by the gun. This unusual combination is confusing enough to effectively shut down the part of your brain responsible for managing speech, and you fall immediately silent.

The first versions of the weapon — if we can even call it that — were dependent on a separate PC to process the input and relay it back to the speaker. However, the second prototype (pictured above) does away with the need for additional hardware and includes all the necessary processing bits within its casing, making it easily portable.

The developers say the gun could be used for seemingly innocuous purposes, such as enforcing rules requiring library patrons to keep quiet. It could also see action during large meetings when it is important that onlookers not disrupt the speaker; anyone who fancies a noisy outburst would immediatley be silenced by the high-tech handheld.

The free speech implications of the speech jammer are somewhat disconcerting: A protestor or speaker at a political rally could be easily silenced just for having unpopular views. Political rallies and other protest gatherings could easily be quieted by the strange gun, should law enforcement or other agencies decide to equip themselves with the technology.

I'd like to have it at work when I am trying to watch a TV show from across the lobby and the drunk businessmen that stagger in at closing time decide to start blatting about their (alleged) barroom conquests.

It looks like it will have major limitations. Only working inside, not outdoor. Probably only works from a short distance and if the room is small enough. I can't see it, in its present form, being useful in large, outdoor demonstrations.

I'm a teacher.

I think it sounds awesome!!!! [:D]

Sounds like it'd be kind of fun to just mess around with.

I like the way this article says it much better.

Point 1/ That thing has a laser. Don't point it at people. You could blind someone.

Point 2/ If you can point it at me and say, "No foul", then I can point it at you and say, "No foul". I am sure the politicians can be made to understand that this device is not one of their friends.

Point 3/ I am pretty sure this thing is already illegal in the United States.

It's hard for me to imagine the practicability of this device in any but a few limited settings. It can only work on one person at a time. What an ungainly looking thing it is. For meetings, someone would have to be positioned at the front of the room and be at the ready to aim and fire at the interrupter. It  would only work for an outburst of more than a few seconds. It would not, e.g., have prevented the infamous "You lie!" at the SOTU address.

It was invented in Japan so who knows, maybe they have a lot more trouble with outbursts in their corporate meetings or in the Japanese Diet.

I can tell you firsthand that the premise of the technology works, though (short delay of your own speech). I ran sound for some years, and the first time I had to make a crowd announcement from the FOH (front of house) mixer I was unaware of the phenomenon and stumbled all over myself ('OH SHIT!', thought I) trying to get through a short sentence. I figured out what I needed to do, started over and focused hard as I could on my immediate voice and got through it. It was NOT easy that first time. After that I practiced to an empty house and found the mental technique needed to do it. I said all kinds of insulting things to myself and had fun with it, and so got used to hearing me repeat myself at varying distances from the speakers.

But it's funny as hell, ya'll should try it sometime if you get the chance.

They will fit in a cell phone, if made legal. They will damage language acquisition in anyone that isn't an adult, and primarily be used against the most susceptible age groups. So, yay for nonlethal weapons. Again.

Health,
