Very sad [&:] The Monkees was the first concert I went to as a kid.

Anaxagoras -> RE: DAVY JONES~~RIP!! (2/29/2012 7:05:10 PM)

Sorry to hear the news likewise. IMHO The Monkeys were a strange mixture of great stuff like Last Train to Clarkesville http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3_bSfBaPVg and fairly awful stuff like "Cuddly Toy". They had very little input in the songs until they took creative control, and some of that was impressive, e.g. Valeri http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWTa9CE51sA which Davey sang on, and the Porpoise http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdd5xI9l7Ns which he had a lot of input on too. He also sang an interesting song called "Someday Man" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mj1bvraWmX8 from 1969 near the band's end. AFAIK it was only released as a b-side to "Listen to the band" at the time...

The Monkees is hands down my all time favorite group. I'm so sad. I didn't even know about this till just now on the scroll.
I fell in crush with Pete first and then Micky, then Mike, then Davy. lol Gosh... so many never-will-be's now that he's dead (I'm sure they never-would-have-been-anyway but ya know - a fangirl can dream.) I own all the shows on DVD. They have been my constant since my early teens (preteens?). There's were the first tapes I ever saved for or spent money on. I can always count on a Monkees tune to cure what ails me or to give me a soundtrack.

I know the group's been apart for a long time but not in my heart. I'm gonna need some time for this to sink in.

That is soooooo fucked up!

I LOOOOOOVED those guys!

I get it. The complaint in the WH thread was that many people die every day from the same demons WH died from and their deaths go unnoticed. I can quote her post if you like. Over a thousand people die every day from heart attacks - most go unnoticed except for family and close friends. When the person is famous it's a different story. I liked the Monkees. I liked Davy Jones and his death saddens me. The parallel between the two threads is there. Your inability to grasp it is yours alone.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: DAVY JONES~~RIP!! (3/1/2012 2:29:31 AM)

Or, it could be that Greedy, like me, had an "Oh man that sucks that another person from my youth is gone" sad moment when she heard about Davy Jones passing, as opposed to the "HTF could someone with everything throw it away like she did?" moment when hearing about Whitney.

I did get a sad when hearing about Davy Jones. I got more of a pity when I heard about Whitney, so, to me, there is a huge difference in how I feel about the two.

Very sad. [:(]

The Monkees were 1 of many bands that formed the soundtrack of my childhood.

DaddySatyr -> RE: DAVY JONES~~RIP!! (3/1/2012 3:44:20 AM)

I was also a fan of the (re-runs of the?) show, when I was growing up. It's a sad day. I will never call The Monkees a great group but there was some talent there.

Interesting (to me, anyway) is that of the four, Davey probably had the least actual musical talent but was added to the group and even "highlighted" in an effort to create sex appeal. He's also the reason David Bowie (née "Jones") changed his name.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Thank you, JstA. That was it exactly.

Mike, I thought Bowie changed his name from Jones back by the end of 1965, a bit before the Monkeys came on the scene?

I heard about this last night on the radio. I used to LOVE watching the monkeys when I got home from school. A sad sad day indeed.

No,I see the parallels ,what you are missing is that in that thread some of us objected to the use of the word"tragedy".
That is all.
We felt(well I did for one) that tragedies are rightfully more truthfully a case when someone dies thru no fault of their own,and despite their fighting for their lives.
All I was saying was that while sad,it was not "tragic" as it could have been prevented had she made the correct adjustments in her lifestyle.
But you go ahead and try to score points on this,and see if you can hold up a mirror pointing out mine and others hypocrisy....I'm okay with what I posted and how I feel about it,I'm pretty sure GT is fine too [:)]

soul2share -> RE: DAVY JONES~~RIP!! (3/1/2012 3:47:04 PM)

Davy, and the other Monkees, are part of my childhood too...I used to LOVE to watch them on TV, and like most (I don't want to risk any wrath here) teenaged girls, fell madly in lust with him. While I enjoyed The Last Train to Clarksville, my favorite was I'm a Believer. Ironically, I never knew it was written by another icon, Neil Diamond, until I read the YH article on Davy's passing.

While I feel for Whitney's family, I too felt nothing more than a strong sense of pity and waste....she could have turned her life around at any given time, had she only wanted to. And, as bad as he was for her, Bobby Brown didn't start her down her path. With Davy's passing, it was definitely an "awwwww, crap" moment.

And just for trivia's sake, how many of you know that Mike Nesmith's mom created Liquid Paper? [8|]

Add me to the list of people who grew up enjoying the Monkees.

My favorite, strangely enough, was always "Zilch".  [8D]

Saw him at the Greek Thwarts this summer and he brought back so many great memories. RIP Davy.

But surely you knew this one was from ND?:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaxwBSyiya8

That having N. Diamond's 'big hunk o' 'coustic guitar' intro, the trademark sound for many of his earlier records.

I remember that show of theirs. I used to catch it sometimes. That was back when tv still cut off. It used to come on in the morning. Funny show.
