What is Dachshund? Archangel? Love Potion? Shiatsu? Fenugreek? Roman Ruins? Splashdown? I was just getting used to Teal and Fuchsia and Lemon and nostalgic for banana yellow or sky blue or moss green.

It must be some weird lottery held in a smoky basement somewhere in the 9th Arondisement where dressed-down paint co marketing drones mix with prissy little soi-disant sophisticates from tiny towns like Duc en Coveur and Bad Dreemz and Sopa del Dia and some unpronounceable Slavic mouthbenders who got there by way of L'Ecole du Lingerie and Universität Leder Kleidung...

They cut up dictionaries, toss anything that isn't noun-like, then draw the names from a giant hollowed-out Bouille.

So when I get to "stage" the house (nobody "sells" anymore) and I'm asked "what color is that?" I can make up any old shit, like "Rusted-out Soviet T-34 on the Volga" or "Heironymos Bosch Dischwarscher".

Look, if you can't paint a straight line with a 2" sash brush from Purdy, don't paint. You don't need blue tape or any of that crap. I'm over fixing "Suzy Homemaker" painting fuckups. Go out and help Harry Homeowner dig up the power line, dear.

I wonder the same things about some fabric designers.

I myself was mesmerized by Kool Aid's Berry Blue color. I took some in a jar to Lowe's and they matched it up in paint for me. My antique bathroom never looked so good.

LOL - I never use any of that stuff when I paint a room. I've not met a person yet that didn't think I was doing it wrong because I didn't 'prep" the room first. It's nice to see my approach validated, even if it is on this weird-ass thread. :)

I cant even draw a straight line. When I was working with lighting crews it didn't take them long to understand that asking me to eyeball LEVEL, that invariably the truss would be lopsided. Yes, I need that tape, and a level to make sure the lines are straight....lol

Professional painters don't mask. It's a pain to put on and if you let the paint dry fully it's a major pain to remove without messing up the paint job. The more you do this, the better you get at painting a clean line.

Oh and fenugreek is a pale green I believe. A couple of years ago all new paint colors were food inspired.  Curry, artichoke, etc. Fashions change in paint as well as in everything else and it's tough to think up new names every year.

My bedroom walls are painted "lemon chiffon". The color you get when you cream butter and sugar.

A friend of mine has a horrible time choosing colors in her art because she gets thrown by the names.

See, now, lemon chiffon I get. Most everybody knows what lemon meringue
pie is. Blend the filling with the meringue, ya basically got the lemon chiffon color. Except it sounds like yours is a little lighter. Laundry room/half bath I did back around 99, I did a light tile floor; beadboard up to a chair rail, then wall. Beadboard and chair rail were Glidden semi-gloss exterior white, and the wall was a pale lemon selected by the buyer. Looked sharp. Was a window, so plenty of light.

GT - you really don't need to be able to draw a straight line; that's already been done for you. You just need to learn how a brush works, and how to control it. Baseboards are the hardest because there's usually a crappy caulk job one has to deal with. I've pulled baseboards away, scraped old caulk, and recaulked so I can get a clean line.

DES - some of those names came from a Canadian site I found when I googled "2012 popular paint colors". It's just eye-roll finny to me.

Your approach is the best I've found for myself. My "prep" consists of filling holes, washing the baseboards (and walls, if they're filthy), washing the trim above doors and windows, taking the covers off outlets and switches, and fixing baseboard/window/doo caulk, if necessary. Then I paint. If I'm super-motivated, I can knock out a typical bedroom in about 5-6 hours.

Thread's gonna get weirder.

Yeah, art colors are their own weird thing. I mean, WTF does the name "phthalo blue" or "dioxazine purple" come from?

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Paint; Jerry Missed My B'Day; OP Missing; Moving; Dopamine; Stress; Licorice Allsorts; Spirit; No Ga (2/26/2012 5:31:59 PM)

Those names come from the chemicals that make up the color! Which is why they make sense to me:)

It's actually kind of making a comeback.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: Paint; Jerry Missed My B'Day; OP Missing; Moving; Dopamine; Stress; Licorice Allsorts; Spirit; No Ga (2/27/2012 5:43:13 PM)

So way back in July, a few weeks before my August B'Day, my buddy Guitar Slinger calls up.
"Jerry's coming to town."
"Jerry? Garcia?"
"He'll be here soon. Get me?"
"Uh, um, not really... OH! Got Ya!"

So we talk a few days later, and I tell him I need the right set and setting. I need to clean my back porch, get the music ready, make some candles, get some incense, have some fruit and whatnot ready... meanwhile he's going to do a test. His buddy Pro Drummer gave him a couple squares one night and went to see Johnny Winter. I caught up with them later in a bar near me...
"Are your eyes dilated?" I ask Pro Drummer.
"Oh yeah," he replies, and that's all I need to know.

So I get to working on my porch. Guitar Slinger calls up day before my B'day... tells me c,mon by. He had a young guy there who was buying a couple sheets. I tell him wait a few days, I'm still getting ready. I see the sheets; beautiful artwork. Next day he calls me up and tells me he ate six tabs after I left... nothing.
"Dude! You were buzzed at the Bar!? What gives?"
"I got burned, brother. I got 10 sheets, $3000 bucks..."
"Well, fuck... you didn't test what you bought? "
"No, I tasted what Pro Drummer gave me. Dealer told him they were from the same batch, just different artwork."
"Shit, bro, we always used to sit down with the source and do a little - an hour, you know, you know what I mean? The ascent is unmistakeable."

What a disappointment. I was so looking forward to tasting Lucy again after 20 years or so. That just sucked. And whoever made that bunk, well, he's got some serious bad Karma points. That's a Sacrament, and you don't fuck with Sacraments. It's just wrong. The Universe gets pissed off about that shit. Christ, it used te be bad Karma to even charge for it.
I needed to do some; had needed to for a long time. Damnit. Still looking.
