While I can admit that I am not likely to heed the advice of most anyone... but I wish I had listened to everyone who told me to have a simple wedding, and save the money, time, and stress spent on an elaborate one.

I wanted every detail of my wedding to be 'just so'... I read the wedding etiquette books <gag>,  spent a year finding the perfect dress, cake, did the wedding shows...  I did end up with the perfect wedding, which combined with a perfect honeymoon, was far better than 7 years of marriage.  Should I get bit by the marriage bug again... I would love to have  a simple, understated, yet meaningful wedding (with subtle hints of D/s, as well as a private D/s ceremony), and have the actual marriage be the focus of all of my energy.

I would find it tacky to take pictures with a fake cake and serve another cake to my guests. I would more likely take pictures with a plain sheet cake which actually was part of my wedding, than to pose with something fake.  Also, I don't like gift registry cards or requests for cash in invitations.  If people don't know me well enough to know what they want to give us, they won't be invited to our wedding

I was in a wedding three weeks ago and the best part about it was the cake and the cake fight near the end. The cake fight ended with about ten people being tossed into the pool - And I wasn't one of them

I cannot STAND people doing that- smushing the cake.

I know for some reason it's become the "fun silly quirky moment to have" for modern weddings, but it will always be idiotic pointless and completely inappropriate for me.

Having just written a very large check to my daughter for her wedding cake, I think a fake cake is a great idea.. wish I had known of them before we purchased her a real one! ::laughs::

Well... I'll just say you had to be there. There was women in their late sixties involved in this cake fight - It was funny as hell! That's what happens when you mix fire water, a few women and a big-ass cake.

There should be no mention of gifts, monetary or otherwise, in an invitation of any kind.  To do so is just plain tacky and shows a lack of class.

I sort of agree with this, and it's a big reason why I would never "register" anywhere for gifts - because you just don't "tell" people what to buy you.  It IS tacky.

However, I see nothing at all wrong with a note in the reception card asking, "In lieu of gifts, the bride and groom are asking that you make a donation to (insert whatever cause here)."  People do bring gifts, and if you really don't need anything, it's simply a waste of their money, so I feel a suggestion to put that money to better use is a good idea.  My sister just got married for the first time in January - at the age of 48.  She really didn't need anything that is typically given as a wedding gift, so she and her new husband asked that people make a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, instead (my nephew was diagnosed as diabetic at the age of 7).  I felt this was absolutely appropriate to their situation.

As for cakes - theirs wasn't a cake at all.  It was a selection of cupcakes, arranged to look like a wedding cake.  We thought it was a cute, novel idea.

I understand that.  My wedding cake wasn't too expensive (about $300, not bad for a three tiered beautiful cake with real red roses), but my Mom just paid for my sister's cake at the same bakery and it was closer to $700.  Ouch!  It's gorgeous, though.  Four tiers, white, with green leafy icing vines forming diamond patterns and little pale pink icing roses at the intersection of every vine.  It's going to have real pale pink roses as a topper.  It's perfect for her.  My sister's always been a bit of a princess.  [:)]

I can see that side of the coin, but the reason I registered is because some people want to be told.  They don't want to get multiples, or something you'll hate, and it's easier on them if you've registered somewhere.  I'd never divulge that information unless expressly asked, because to do otherwise would be tacky, but it's a nice thing to do in case people want to know.

kisshou -> RE: Wedding Season (6/3/2006 10:37:42 AM)

I don't like the registering idea either but I can see how someone can bow to the pressure of a hundred aunts, uncles and cousins calling to ask what store you registered at.

I didn't so much realize you meant a fake (non edible) cake , more of a display cake.

Also alot of single people take a slice of cake home. Supposedly you keep it in your freezer for a year , then stick it under your pillow and sleep on it and you will dream of who you are going to marry. Or something like that.

I wonder if there are just as many weird wedding traditions as there are BDSM fetishes.

Ok here's how the cake things work:

A single woman takes home a slice of cake and sleeps on it and dreams of the man she will marry.

The bridal couple freeze the top layer or a smaller cake made by the bakery for a year and eat it on their first wedding anniversary.

Oh yeah...when I was a kid I read a lot and my mom had a lot of different books on etiquette.  I loved to read them as girl....

edited for typos

You sleep *on* the cake?

Wouldn't that be ... messy?

I mean my gawd ... My stupid dogs would probably shove me off the bed so they could eat the dern cake.

angelface183 -> RE: Wedding Season (6/3/2006 11:33:55 AM)

well the cake is wrapped up in plactic or a baggie.  I have even been to weddings where the cake is wrapped up with ribbons and everything for the ladies to take home and place under their pillow.  just a tiny sliver of a piece...i have never done it, but i have taken the piece home to munch on later...maybe that is why I am still single!

SoquilisGirl -> RE: Wedding Season (9/2/2006 6:17:54 PM)

We had a fake cake at my first wedding, but only because the woman my mother hired to make the white chocolate-apricot cheesecake had *no* idea how to make a cheesecake and delivered it, mostly raw, still in the non-springform pans. She made the fake one so we could have something to take pictures with, but didn't bother to provide an actual edible cake for us to serve.

The caterer was in tears when she saw the cake and was amazed that I took it so calmly. I figured by then there was nothing I could do about it. Thankfully the caterers provided pie for dessert, so at least we had *something*.

The woman mom hired to make the cheesecake was offended when we refused to pay for it!

Soquili's Girl
Who has started planning her second wedding - this time to her Daddy. :) Needless to say, my mother will have nothing to do with planning this one!
