I feel for you I really do,and I know what You are going thru cause I've been there.
A few things off the bat, never ever have back surgery till you need back surgery.
That might sound like a silly thing to say,but understand this...surgeons perform surgery, that's what they do,that is how they make their living.
So when you go to a surgeon this is the route he will advise you to take.
Second...if you are having your spine operated on you should be in a neurosurgeons care.Case closed
Now if you have already decided that your quality of life is unbearable due to chronic pain,if the meds you are taking are not working/becoming part of the problem themselves than have the surgery...but remember the second point ...only a neurosurgeon goes near your spine(again case closed)
I have had seven surgeries on my back,no make that six(my shoulder doesn't count) i will probably need another sooner or later.....but I will not be cut till I have no other option.
It is just the sensible thing to do,but pain can debilitate one so badly that the last option become's the best option...at that point you find yourself the best neuro guy you can find and place yourself in his hands.
Good luck,I hope everything turns out okay.I will live the rest of my life on pain meds of one sort or another, but tomorrow I will be on a golf course with my nephew...and probably kick his ass.
After playing I will probably need a good hour in extremely hot water followed by some electro stimulation from my tens unit....but i will be walking upright to the dinner table and will be living my life tolerating the pain instead of having the pain dictate to me what i can and can not do
That is victory of some sort.....at least I think so

I've had lower back pain off and on for almost 30 years. Yoga has helped me, but it can also hurt, so I recommend you find a chiropractor who is also knowledgeable about yoga, or a yoga teacher thoroughly trained in back issues.

http://www.livestrong.com/article/368765-degenerative-disk-disease-yoga/#ixzz1mkowHA2i

Degenerative disk disease is a condition causing pain from a damaged disk, according to Peter F. Ullrich, M.D. Disk degeneration also happens naturally with aging, but yoga can help relieve the pain associated with the condition regardless of the cause. As with any new treatment, consult your doctor first.

+1, whether you choose to have surgery or not.

I too have ddd (low back) and neck pain from a rafting accident. After several rounds of steroid injections (worthless in my case), I opted out of surgery. Surgery should be viewed as an absolute last resort: statistics openly quoted from my honest neurosurgeon was 1/3 improve, 1/3 stay the same, and 1/3 GET WORSE.

In my case, restorative (ananda) yoga provided enough relief to get completely off opiate pain relievers. It helped during the taper-down (10 days) and continues to keep me functioning. It gently strengthens your whole musculature, which is all you have left to compensate when bones begin to deteriorate. It taught me proper posture, relaxation techniques, meditation, and how to make my body comfortable in any situation using just a couple of cotton blankets which I can take anywhere.

I can't say enough good things about ananda. If you can, find a class near you to learn it, then you can do it on your own. Our community center has ananda classes for $5...check your city or local college for low-cost classes. Failing (or in addition) to that, check your library system for ananda (relaxation) or other appropriate yoga dvds. There is also an excellent book by Judith Lasater here which is a good place to start (but best to have an instructor show you.)

Good luck to you. There IS relief available and you don't need drugs or surgery to start improving TODAY! Yoga is something that will serve you well your whole life. No matter what your health status, it can be adapted to your situation. It has been, and continues to be a life saver to me.

TY for all your input. I will definitely look into ALL your suggestions. I am just so tired of being in pain and feel like an addict because Percocet is about the only thing that helps me function as a "normal" member of society. But the fact that I have been taking them for so long now I know it has to be doing damage to my liver and who knows what else.

Note: this is Ananda from California, not Ananda Ashram in Monroe, New York, which does not have a similar emphasis on restorative yoga.

I send you strength. Have faith. And while on my diet, do add salt as required. (Shortage of salt is the main reason I eat specific cookies, I believe. But do not you eat cookies, as nearly all will be harmful. At a later time, when your symptoms have disappeared, you can experiment a little with slight changes in your diet.)
