The nose-burying instinct is normal, so leave it alone. His breeds are high energy dogs. For the best, balanced dog, in this order provide: exercise, discipline, then love. Their reward should be YOU being a calm, assertive leader. No excitement, treats or great rewards are necessary.

Get thee to watching MANY episodes of The Dog Whisperer, practice what he teaches, and you won't go wrong.

Also, do any vets/boarding kennels/kennel clubs in your area do "puppy preschool"? It's like super basic obedience and socialisation classes. Pup might enjoy it.

I checked into that. They have puppy training classes in the spring and summer in our town. The classes going on now are an hour drive each way.

Because too many people do. And too many people commit to a dog without taking the needs of the specific breed or mix into consideration.

Most definitely.

The smarter the dog the more 'challenging' the pre-adulthood can be. Nala will be two next month and she still isn't all the way there.

OP, just realize that allowing your dog to spend time out in the fenced yard will not be all of the exercise your dog requires. An hour a day, brisk walk, will be the best. It will save you more trouble than you can imagine.

Three of us took care of our Husky - I was First and Last walks, minimally 1/2 mile each. Neither the Baby nor I were inclined towards long walks during South Florida summers but we loved them during the "winter" and would often do two miles on the golf course at night after the golfers left.

R had the Baby during the day and K in the evening.
