The world wouldn't be a safe place.

Hehehe I heard about this on FB.

PETA wouldn't be PETA if they weren't doing things extreme. You have to be extreme these days to get people's attention.

Kaliko -> RE: Damn good thing I'm not Vegan (2/14/2012 4:12:56 PM)

I think if it were done just a touch less....well, just a touch less.....then it could be good. PETA skirted the line and I think they crossed just over it. The concept I don't think is awful. I know I've seen parodies of those types of public service announcements before. Everybody will jump on it because it's PETA, but PETA did that to themselves.

BitaTruble -> RE: Damn good thing I'm not Vegan (2/14/2012 4:18:36 PM)

PETA - those are the folks who threw paint on rich women in furs but never threw paint on biker dudes in leather, right?

Meh.

MasterG2kTR -> RE: Damn good thing I'm not Vegan (2/14/2012 4:28:15 PM)

I dunno Hill.....the big white cock might not even fit in the picture if you did go vegan....just sayin' [;)]

When I lived at the ashram I got more sex than all the vegans put together [8D]

Not really. All they're doing, is to make people numb. Desensitization.

Unless they're also looking to get revolutionary, they need to keep things at a level where it can be taken seriously without people either burning out or ceasing to care. Most of the people I know that have any serious interest in animal welfare are allergic to even being reminded that PETA exists, let alone having to deal with all their revelling in the suffering of animals. You'd think they got off on it, the way they tend to dig in every time there's more animal suffering to be watched. Maybe they do get a rise out of it, for all I know. A lot of whackjobs go to places they can indulge without feeling guilty.

Me, I have a limit on how much I can take in without tuning out.

Children and animals get empathy and protector instincts out of me, and there's a distinct point at which dealing with the global amount of pain causes a feeling of being powerless, instead of inciting to act in a local perspective. PETA is one of those groups that continually reinforce the notion that it neither matters, nor pays off, and that's why I consider PETA and their kind to be a serious threat to animal welfare.

For them to start playing the sex card instead would be a very good thing.

Health,
al-Aswad.

When I originally became a vegetarian, the guy I was talking to as a mentor-type at the time (in the real world sense, not the BDSM sense haha) who ran his own animal shelter and had been a veg since the 70s hhhaaaattteeedddd PETA with every fiber of his being. Their messages are too incendiary and generally rely on objectifying women in order to "defend" animals.

When I lived in Virginia, near where their headquarters is, a bunch of their operatives went out in the neighborhoods and let people's pets out of fences. So many dogs were killed or never made it home -- how was that possibly good for them?

If PETA actually did suceed at its goal, it would go out of business. I don't think their aim really has ever been to succeed. They're who any anti-animal-rights person turns to and says "look at those nutjobs, do you want to be like them?" There are lots of cards to throw, and PETA has one of their own. =p People use the PETA card to divert a worthwhile discussion on anything else to "well what about those freaks at PETA?" They create more problems than they fix, and I think that might be the point.

I don't quite understand the total IQ of the ad execs in this country it has to be in the lower 80's anymore.

I know I'm getting old because I am starting to sound more and more like my mother and father did when I was growing up.

Let's use our heads. What exactly does a half nude woman have to do with PETA or anything else?

As far as being vegan well there are no true vegans in the world. We all eat insects everyday of our lives.

Yes, yes I know off topic but hey..you used the word vegan and it urks me every time I see the word. At least I am more on topic than the person who Ok'd the ad in the first place.

All that lack of iron and animal protein left them weak and wimpy.

Jaquin -> RE: Damn good thing I'm not Vegan (2/16/2012 1:44:43 AM)

PETA - the trolls of offline.

IMO they do most of what they do just to get people all riled up, they probably sit and laugh at all the negative publicity.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Damn good thing I'm not Vegan (2/16/2012 3:41:56 AM)

Being vegetarian doesn't make you weak and wimpy. I give blood and always have excellent iron levels. I have no issue building muscle, either - in fact, I'm currently trying to avoid building much more. As far as vegans go, there's a whole universe of vegan body builders. :p there's one really well known one from Corvallis, WA. Being veg may not be for you, but don't randomly insult others who are just because of a bunch of whackjobs.

LaTigresse -> RE: Damn good thing I'm not Vegan (2/16/2012 4:04:46 AM)

Well they certainly get my attention with their stunts. Of course I am not saying that is good attention, but it's attention. At this point if they started making sense, I wouldn't listen to them because of their past actions.

GreedyTop -> RE: Damn good thing I'm not Vegan (2/16/2012 5:07:55 AM)

thb, they have ceased to even get my attention, unless it somehow gets shoved in my face. I agree, if they ever say anything worth hearing I'll miss it simply because (as Aswad said) I've become desensitized to them.

LaTigresse -> RE: Damn good thing I'm not Vegan (2/16/2012 6:37:27 AM)

To me, it's similar to the anti abortionists standing on the corners around Planned Parenthood.

kalikshama -> RE: Damn good thing I'm not Vegan (2/16/2012 10:21:50 AM)

Wyatt Cenac speaks to whale freedom rider Lisa Lange about PETA's SeaWorld slavery lawsuit and finds out why civil rights activist Elaine Brown won't get on the freedom train.

Yep. And PETA is a joke to most animal activists myself included. I don't have a single friend among my rescue friends that have one good thing to say re: PETA.

I know LaT was kidding but that is such a common misconception that vegetarians and vegans are weak. Protein comes from a ton of other sources than flesh.
