Marini -> Great News!! 10 states get waiver for no child left behind!! (2/9/2012 7:58:53 PM)

I first heard the news this morning, I was so damn happy, I yelled
fucking A, about time on this!!!!

President Obama announced today that he is granting waivers for the central requirements for no child left behind to 10 states!!!
Instead these states have promised that they will adopt their own higher reforms and standards for the way they educate children.

President Obama is giving states the green lights to actually set their own standards, and the proposed standards that I have heard about so far, were impressive to me.

About damn time, I say!!!
At least 28 states are not far behind stating that they also need more flexibility.

It looks like teachers may soon be able to actually teach more, and not spend most of the school year teaching to the test!!!

Reform and real changes may actually start to happen!

10 states get waiver for no child left behind

One tiny step back from the great corporate/federal push to make all kids grow up to be unquestioning tear-up-the-job-description 'team player' mindless worker bees, training for such starting as early as 6 weeks old ... but hey, I'll take it.

Does this mean that teachers can allow 4-5 yr. olds to use paper and crayon and pencil perhaps once a week now instead of sitting them in front of a keyboard and screen all the time?

Imagine, actually letting the states, school boards, teachers, educators, parent/teacher associations, parents and all that are concerned about education have an actual "say" in the goals/objectives/and standards that they feel are most important, and how they want to go about achieving those standards.

This will do nothing. Why do teachers need a waiver to teach more ? Why weren't they teaching more regardless if there is a no child left behind law or not ?

The point is that they were able to 'teach more' as you so eloquently put it prior to the "no child left with own mind" program, but more important, as Marini is alluding to, is that teachers can teach more appropriately when not having to confine themselves to the strictures of that program.

Teachers and school boards have always had a say in their states education. No child left behind held them to a standard in order to get some federal funds. Now they have waiver and will not have to reach those goals to get the federal money.

Teachers who deviate from the set curriculum can be terminated/ not have their contracts renewed.

I have actually seen it happen. Unprofessional as fuck. But I digress.

Point is, you do your job as described to you by your employer. This includes adhering to learning curriculums.

So you supported bush`s top down imposition of this federal law on us?

Or is this the 1st time you have heard of it?

GFYG

Anyway, realizing you're WAY the fuck out of the child bearing years let me clue you in on something. NCLB has resulted in lots of states spending far too much time in test prep mode. And it's daunting for a lot of us parents, particularly those with kids who are academically gifted. My kids for most of their academic career have had to hang back while they prep for a test marginally indicative of any kind of 'achievement'...
And we can't really separate them in most communities due to the fact that we have right wing shitheads (not unlike some people I correspond with in fact) who leap on every opportunity not to pay it forward now that they have THEIRS, so to speak.
(now I am sorry this cold is keeping me awake)

Yes. Now we are back to wasting money with no standards.

Edwynn -> RE: Great News!! 10 states get waiver for no child left behind!! (2/9/2012 9:01:40 PM)

The methods of that program do not work in regards to stated purpose of raising overall academic performance.

I will confirm this since I am barely 5 years out of public high school.

Stern, Granting these waivers will not change what your kids school is doing. It is all about making the schools look better to get more federal money. Students come in second.

Fortunately, you are mistaken... In my town anyway, we're already planning a meeting of the PTOs around the state in conjunction with the State Board Of Education to determine if some positive way forward can be achieved. And I'm just fine if you spare me the pessimism prior to our having a chance to explore what can be done.

As opposed to wasting irreplaceable TIME prepping for a test demanded by beauracrats who know little and care less what little Johnie Joe might be capable of, inclined toward or interested in?

Speaking as one who spent most of his public school career waiting for his class to catch up to him, I'm going to guess you didn't have that problem.

Get out of the childrens' way and let them learn !

(Fer crying out loud.)

servantforuse -> RE: Great News!! 10 states get waiver for no child left behind!! (2/9/2012 9:19:06 PM)

Why weren't they teaching children all along then ? No child left behind was started because kids couldn't read or do math. Now we have a waiver and everything will be ok.

I completely get that there's little to no chance of reaching you.
But here's a few facts about my local school system dynamic that might help you see.

When NCLB started, there was a DIFFERENT generation of teachers in the system. There was systemic apathy.

In the years since a new generation of teachers has replaced that population and in my system out of some 275 teachers, only 30 of the previous era teachers still exist. And I'd say they are the better ones. We had a mass retirement after the first year of MCAS. It was 'too much work'.

The current breed has a "Just turn me loose on these kids" mentality. LOTS are very new,  and they are DYING to teach using methods that were new at the time they got into college.

Lastly unlike the vast majority of the teachers from the previous generation, these young people followed degree path CENTERED on delivering education, as opposed to a generation that entered teaching before Reagan and just needed something to apply a bachelor's degree to.
