Ok, so I'm leaving for Portugal in about two weeks and will be there for 9 days. Does anyone have any off the beaten path suggestions on what to see and do? I already about all the tourist stuff but I'm wondering if there's anything I'm missing that isn't in guide books or online travel sites. If you've been there was there something that you thought was amazing, kewl, different?

We'll actually be staying about a mile outside of Lisbon but we plan to do a lot of trips to other places and even possibly Seville, Spain.

So, any ideas are welcome!

The almond nut trees of the Algarve. Whether they are in bloom or not.

Once, a thousand or more years ago, a fleet of Viking ships returned from the Mediterranean on their way home and thought it a good idea to attack and plunder the Algarve. It wasn't. The Algarve in those days were occupied by a Jewish - Muslim - sect, who mutilated the penises of their offspring by way of circumcision. Their circumcised king was proficient in the art of war and the Vikings were defeated and either killed or if not killed, enslaved. Now the Viking chieftain had a handsome daughter and the king was strangely attracted to her. He decided to house her in his palace and to let her wander in his gardens. And he happened to meet her there quite often. And at last she inquired why he did not enslave her or rape her and he confessed that he was in love with her and asked her to marry him. And accordingly it ensued that they did marry.

Then she got sick after a while. No local physician could cure her. The king sent for physicians from farther away. But none could cure her. The desperate king sent messengers out all over Europe and the Muslim world, but none could cure her and she languished and languished.

Then an old man came from very far away, very very far indeed. He demanded to speak with the chieftain's daughter in her rooms, alone. Of course that improper request caused quite a commotion among the peoples with circumcised penises: they might make love and the old man might infect her with a sexually transmitted disease! The king, however, was very desperate, extremely so. So against his cultural indoctrination, and perchance against his genetic programing, he yielded to the suspect demand of the old man and admitted him to the rooms of his sick wife, alone.

And lo and behold: after the old man had been inside for a long time and everyone outside was extremely worried, for they might have illegal sex, he came out and the Viking chieftain's daughter was much more lively and even smiled. So the king asked the old man, what he had done that his wife was feeling so much better and what disease she suffered from. And the old man answered: "I talked with her in her own language. She is homesick for the mountains and snows of our far away country. What you should do, is to plant almond nut trees everywhere so that when the time comes that their bloom has passed the whole earth of your land will be covered by their white flower petals".

And so it ensued that the king planted almond trees everywhere and that his wife recovered from her illness.

And that is why I would go see the almond nut trees of the Algarve if ever I visited Portugal, whether they be in bloom or not.

would have been a good story if he wouldn't have littered it with his circumcision conspiracy theories lol.

It is in one of the books I have, but I have forgotten which one. But here is a link.

Hey! That is an essential part of the story, as it applies to motivation.

Oh I ignored that part - it's still a great story!  As someone who lives where English is an afterthought, I really appreciated the spirit of the story even if a few of the details were not cool.  It's an amazing thing to walk into a grocery store and recognize the food, understand the weather, know the songs on the radio, AND hear people speaking my own language.  In that way, it really resonated for me.  :0)

speaking of language, I found this cool little app on my iphone that translates to almost any language you need. You can either type in what you want to translate or speak into your phone and it will do it also and you can hear it speak it back to you in the foreign language. I thought at first it would be lame but I played around with it for the last few days and it actually works well and speaks it correctly! I was kinda shocked. It will be sooo useful in portugal since I don't know any portuguese or spanish at all. I can practice on the plane and if I can't pronounce something I can at least hold up the iphone to whoever in Portugal so they'll understand what I need hahaha.

In Seville you're about 50 miles from Sherry country and 100 miles from Gibraltar. Spain makes some killer cheeses, and if you can find any, try some Serrano ham.

Can't help you with Portugal; haven't been yet.

It shouldn't be too much of an issue for you, littlewonder. (I wrote you on the other side). Most of the younger generation in Portugal speak English and love the chance to practice and if you learn just a few phrases in Portuguese to get the ball rolling, the locals will love that you made the attempt to converse in their language. I hope you have a blast on your vacation and get to experience the wonderful people, their food and culture while you are there. :D

Bon Voyage!

Be careful with that!  We tried that little app with Korean, and it was a total bust!  I tried basics like "Hello" and "How are you" and "yes" and "no" - ALL of them were wrong - Korean to English AND English to Korean.

Just a friendly warning... :)

Thanks for the warning sunshinemiss. That's why I've been practicing with it and going to portuguese sites that have recordings to help you learn the language and so far it seems to be doing really well. I gave the app to my daughter so she can see how well it works also before we use it.

I really can't wait to go although I still have to buy some things before we go, make sure our arrangements are done, set up a loose and casual itinerary for us, blah blah blah. I'm having difficulty with my online classes because I take too many breaks to read more about Portugal. lol

I should be working on my classes but I need a break. My eyes are going buggy from reading lol.

thanks everyone. We have plans to go to the place in Belem that originated the pasteis supposedly. And the hotel we're staying at gives you a carafe full of port everyday in your room and has an honesty bar in the library. It's a boutique hotel with a balcony right on the Tagus River and it's BEAUTIFUL. I was amazed to get it for a steal but according to reviews it's a great hotel and a 5 star.

Now I just gotta lose about 10 lbs so I can pig out while I'm there. Unfortunately I'm staaarving lol...but will be worth it hehe.
