Straight out of the pages of Orwell`s '1984'.......

Thought criminals get arrested......

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/01/house-republicans-order-j_n_1246971.html

"In a stunning break with First Amendment policy, House Republicans directed Capitol Hill police to detain a highly regarded documentary crew that was attempting to film a Wednesday hearing on a controversial natural gas procurement practice. Initial reports from sources suggested that an ABC News camera was also prevented from taping the hearing; ABC has since denied that they sent a crew to the hearing."

Wow... Now THAT is truly fucked up, Hell I've brought a/v recording equipment to committee meetings ... they only shake you off if it's a "full house" kind of deal.

I expect what I've always expected.
Dude, the only time I have ever been told I couldn't record something in DC was at the Tennessee Inaugural Ball in 93... That was a tragedy because no one will ever see The Nashville Allstars, Bob Weir & Rob Wasserman, Lou Reed, and Paul Simon on the same bill, let alone all of them singing "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" acapella ever again.

UPDATE: 2:27 p.m. -- Fox apparently had applied for credentialing the day before the hearing but had been unable to obtain official permission to film. He had asked a credentialed film crew to tape the proceedings on his behalf but was informed that this was not permitted.

You kinda forgot to mention the law breaking...[8|]

You really ought to read that book, Owner59, so you'll quit blowing it on the attempted references. It's out of copyright, and available free online, for Christ's sake. Or start with Animal Farm. That's an easy read, and just as free.

Well now that we're on the topic, why not help us out and name the broken statute?

I would be more inclined to believe that having a member of the press removed from a meeting of public officials is "Law Breaking".

Seriously, what law did he break? Just because a public official says "Get him out of here" doesn't mean that he is within the law to say so.

Trespassing, for one.

I think they would have a hard time claiming that credentialled press in a public building covering a meeting of public officials that doesn't involve military secrets is trespassing.

You might want to break out that old copy of the constitution out.

The officials in question appear to be wiping their ass with it.

there's a little thing called "Sunshine Laws" that the congressional members appear to be breaking in this one.

Rob, being charged with something isn't at all the same thing as breaking a law. If a police officer pulls be over and screams at me and I follow his orders but ask for his badge number I have broken no law. He may very well arrest and charge me with "resisting arrest" but those are just charges. A court of law is who determines if I broke a law or not.

Also, Rob has zero understanding of the Capitol Police and their process. Fox will necer be charged with anything. He would be routinely detained till all the parties he might be likely to "have words" with have left for the day and then released.
#1 There is no statute that proscribes "arrest" or any penalty to the press asserting the 1st amendment at am PUBLIC Hearing... and in truth... It's rather routine for a committee chairman to make a remark about removing the press for VARIOUS reasons. What's remarkable here is that ONE member in good standing as a video journalist was singled out and forcefully removed. It's pretty ugly behavior, and it's a pity more don't see things your way..

kdsub -> RE: House cons order arrest of reporter covering their secret meeting.... (2/2/2012 11:34:49 AM)

From what I read the crew, as others did, must apply for permission to film which they did not, or at least was not filed in time… They could have been present without their cameras and taken all the notes and reported as they pleased….But they showed up with cameras and refused to leave…so they were arrested.

What is so wrong about this story? The camera laws apply through all offices of government and should be followed.

I will agree that the denial may have been politically motivated and wrong but certainly not against the Constitution.

Butch

Fox was released hours later--this happened yesterday 2/1/12--in time to make an appearance on the Ed Schultz show.
