Oldest one I remember is the drum solo in "Wipeout"

I'm sure that isnt the oldest but it was one of the coolest in its era.

Good call: Surfaris - Wipe Out from 1963 is a definite contender but I'm not 100% about it as there doesn't seem to be any actual drum solo in it, when the other guys aren't playing the drummer is keeping the beat, as per the start.

Moonhead -> RE: Good drum solos. (1/30/2012 9:47:10 AM)

Yeah, there's plenty of songs with a drum into before the rest of the band kicks in. "Be My Baby" was earlier still, wasn't it?

Anyone here know what the first drum solo in pop or rock music was? I have my own theory but ain't sharing with you lot... [8D]

Anax, are you thinking of Gene Krupa?

I don't know the first first, but Joe Morello's solo in Take Five was a game changer.

As far as I know Gene Krupa and Joe Morello's work with the Dave Brubeck would qualify as Jazz. BTW I think one Jazz track from the same era is a landmark for drum work, due to the improv dual drummers, is Free Jazz by Ornette Coleman. A serious muthafucka to listen to at 37 mins though...

I thought it was around the same time as Wipe out but maybe someone can confirm that...

Good call, I reckon Ian Paice is underrated in comparison to more flamboyant drummers like John Bonham. The high BPM of his drumming on Made in Japan is the best thing about it IMHO...

Moonhead -> RE: Good drum solos. (1/30/2012 12:46:47 PM)

Both '63, but I think the Ronettes one came out a month or two earlier.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: Good drum solos. (1/30/2012 3:07:40 PM)

Drumming doesn't get any better than Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, and Vinnie Colaiuta at this memorial concert for Buddy Rich. Vinnie is my "role model" these days. He's been playing for Jeff Beck for a while (Beck is in a class of his own).

I'll defer to your knowledge on the matter but Wipe Out may have been recorded earlier (the previous year) as wiki suggests http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wipe_Out_(instrumental) whilst I assume Spector wouldn't have sat on Be My Baby for too long!

His old lady would have killed him, no doubt.

Buzzzz -> RE: Good drum solos. (1/30/2012 5:56:19 PM)

I will agree with the Gadd, Weckl and colaiuta video

Jeff Beck, Vinnie, Tal - Theme from "Peter Gunn" - The intro is a ~2 minute Vinnie solo. Non-drummers probably won't know what to listen for, but take it from me, the guy is phenomenal.

Vinnie does a short solo (about 4 minutes in) on this performance of
"I'm Tweaked"
with his band Karisma. Guitarist is no slouch, either. Notice how Vinnie seems to be playing at a different tempo in parts of it? Folks were trying to transcribe it on the RMPP newsgroup, and couldn't. That is brilliance.

I'm surprised noone mentioned Carl Palmer of ELP.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: Good drum solos. (1/30/2012 7:31:14 PM)

The thread's young, HillWill. Saw ELP at the Fox here in ATL around 76? Not my cuppa, genre-wise.

Ginger, Eric, & Jack - "Toad"
Pretty good for a 70 year-old "hippie" on morphine, eh?
He's still got the chops. Seems to like triplets as much as I do... [8D]

Delilya -> RE: Good drum solos. (1/30/2012 7:53:01 PM)

My favorite is Micheal Shrieve, Santana's Soul Sacrifice from Woodstock.

Or even Carl Palmer out of King Crimson...

Buzzzz -> RE: Good drum solos. (1/31/2012 4:46:02 AM)

If you want to talk about musicality in a drum solo while keeping the groove , Peter Erskine is the man :)

Now why has nobody mentioned this one yet?
Moby Dick - Led Zeppellin

John Bonham FTW!
