Marc2b -> TIRE FIRE!!!! (1/27/2012 1:17:03 PM)

A tire recycling plant in my home town is on fire.  They already have VIDEO of it on the web.  Fortunately for me the wind is blowing the smoke away from where I'm at now.

YIKES!

That's so scary! Stay safe.

And now I've got to drive home which will take me into the direction the smoke is heading.  Fortunately I live on the opposite side of town from the fire so, hopefully, it will be diluted enough by the time it gets there.

I will.  Thanks.  It's just that you look at all that smoke and, like Greedy says, "Yikes!"

Got your hazmat suit and gas mask out?? That is an AWFUL smell. If you have to drive through it, keep your a/c or heater vent off, or that smell will get into the vehicle and you'll never get it out!
Good Luck!

See? See what happens when you recycle?
"Global Warming!" (Or whatever they're calling it this week)

This is a photo I took from a spot near my back yard on friday around 5:15pm or so.  It is approximately five miles distance.  The smoke, by the time it got to my area was a bit to the south and high enough not to be a bother.  The fire was finaly put out Saturday morning and now the investigation begins.  They're saying it looks like an electrical failure but that the tires were not properly stored.  This is not the first time this company has had troubles.  I feel sorry for the people who live nearby... I wonder how long it will be before the stench goes away.

holy shit!

and not only the stench (which god knows is bad enough), but the lingering toxins....

JstAnotherSub -> RE: TIRE FIRE!!!! (1/30/2012 8:45:45 AM)

Ugh Marc...not only do they stink, but they will smolder for days or weeks.  Been there done that.  Just try to stay out the smoke the best you can.

mnottertail -> RE: TIRE FIRE!!!! (1/30/2012 8:48:39 AM)

How can tirepiles be started on fire and its not arson?

kdsub -> RE: TIRE FIRE!!!! (1/30/2012 11:46:09 AM)

Marc I hope your fire is different then the one we had on the east side of St. Louis... That fire burned for weeks and smoldered for months.

Yeah, tires are a bitch to put out but they say they have done so (there's no more smoke, at any rate) but they are still pouring water on it and keeping an eye open, just in case.
