I would be happy to answer that. Just a practice doesn't. I don't think Romney shouldn't be elected because his church practices baptism for the dead ( although what kind of an idiot believes in crap like that). However, the Mormon church is structured differently than most churches. Instead of a paid, regular clergy, the priesthood holders ( all men, naturally) take the leadership roles. Romney was a bishop, and engaged in some pretty odd behaviors. To me, that is a little different than just sitting in the pews. Here is an article that discusses this a little more. http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/2012/02/mitt-romney-201202

What`s so objectionable about that guy?

Specifically.

I'll just refer you to Google for an answer to your question, Owner59. Once you are up to speed, you can then explain how a practice within Romney's faith reflects more about him, than what was being said from the particular pulpit, in front of the particular pew, where President Obama chose to sit over the course of 20 odd years, should have reflected onto him.

To my mind, the whole practice smacks of a way to separate the gullible believers from their coin, but temples and custom robes, and towers for the call to prayer to be shouted from, don't come cheap in any religion.

To have some Mormon decide to change their religion posthumously after they fought so hard to keep it is just disgusting and disrespectful.

You do realize that they aren't actually changing anything, right?

In reality no, but in theory yes. They're baptizing Jews that that were killed during the Holocaust into the Mormon faith. People that died because they wouldn't renounce their religion. It's disrespectful. They're minimizing what they did and considering their views on how important ancestry in heaven is....it's hypocritical.

No, they are not doing it even in theory. What they are doing is claiming to be able to baptize someone after they are dead. Now if someone came up and claimed they were going to baptize my dead relatives because they don't believe they were saved before they died, I would think they were idiots, but I would not believe they were changing anything. Nor would I think that my dead relatives would care. Personally I have more important things to be offended about.

YAY! Mormon bashing!

I love the tolerance and acceptance!

So we are to accept any behavior or belief no matter how offensive or demeaning under the guise of religion.....why?

How can a dead person possibly be offended?

What about the dead person's relatives?

Owner59 -> RE: Mitt Might Have a Dead People Baptism Problem (1/26/2012 8:02:58 AM)

What if there were a group going around posthumously converting Christians and Jews to Islam?

Again, kind of a nutty idea and embarrassing if you got caught doing it for sure but no less insulting to the family of the dececed, than this strangeness.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Mitt Might Have a Dead People Baptism Problem (1/26/2012 8:11:06 AM)

It is a revolting practice, and it isn't even that church's most revolting practice. The blatant sexism, and until not all that long ago, racism, is far worse.

mnottertail -> RE: Mitt Might Have a Dead People Baptism Problem (1/26/2012 8:13:31 AM)

Think of the damage done to the heathens....
God didn't give me enough of a fuckin while I was alive?  Now hes gonna fuck me when I'm dead?

Moonhead -> RE: Mitt Might Have a Dead People Baptism Problem (1/26/2012 9:24:59 AM)

It'd be a bit fucking rough on the pagans, wouldn't it? Just imagine: you're a dead Black metal musician who was well into the Nordic Astaru nonsense, and the Mormons baptise after you've died.
One minute you're sitting in Valhalla with a valkyrie on your lap and the hand that isn't holding a foaming tankard of odin's potent mead up her chainmail microskirt, and the next you're suddenly stuck in a much duller afterlife wearing magic underwear...

and your boys cut off so you can sing soprano in a choir.

Well, if they ever make me wear magic underwear, it better belong to Cheryl Cole. [;)]

So. . . you are talking about being offended on behalf of a dead person? Seems a bit odd.

Really ? I doubt you would be happy if it was done to a loved one you had just lost. I know I wouldnt and consider that the normal feeling to have.

Would you be happy with any religion doing this to any deceased person ? To me the notion alone is unacceptable.
