I have just been watching this documentary about a completely screwed up internet relationship

http://www.belch.com/blog/2007/11/28/mary-shieler-cybersexed-brian-barrett-to-death/

The crux being that this woman did not get arrested because there is no law. There are clear victims in this, not just the murdered boy but the daughter. How can this be changed? Should it be? Should Mary Shieler have gone to prison for this?

I think it is an interesting story. I know its a while old so may have been discussed on here before.

Yes she was a crazy bored housewife, yes she is a bitch and all around immoral person but at no time did she plan on anyone murdering the other. At no time did she think that would happen so in reality she is not at fault. There is no law against being crazy. The most they could probably get her for is identity theft. They couldn't even get her for harassment because it doesn't sound like she was doing that to either one and instead playing the two off of each other. It happens all the time on the net. Hell, it even happens here all the time.

So while this is a sad story, Tom went to jail as justified and it seems she's been sued in civil court meaning any future assets will be claimed being that she has none now. I don't see any other law that she would have broke.

Yup, people are stupid and another reason I don't take anyone or anything online seriously. Show up face to face and even then it takes a few months for me to say you are who you claim to be.  Unfortunately there's just too many people out there who are bored, naive and desperate.

Good Lord.  Those idiots are all insane.

Her "crime" was in misrepresenting herself on the Internet.  Lots of people do it every day.  It's not her fault that Montgomery was evidently homicidal and delusional.

I saw this and it was seriously messed up, especially
the bit about the daughter.
I think it was Kierkegaard that said boredom
is the root of all evil. The Internet is
full of bored people, unstable people
and the clueless.
I'm sorry the guy is dead.
The guy in jail deserves to be in jail.
He did what he did and is responsible
for it.
I agree 100% with littlewonder's post.

I think that the parents of the murdered boy are trying to get a new law introduced. I was furious when I watched it yesterday but on reclection it is hard to think what law could be passed. I mean she caused the whole thing, she manipulated people, was intentionally cruel but as has been said didn't pull the trigger. Worst is she seems to show no remourse whatsoever.

What's the difference in me telling you a lie face to face as me telling a lie online?
I think our mistake is we do not consider the internet to be real.
It's the Wicked Wild West and people love the lawlessness.
We are condoning crime on it with a vengeance.
Steal a record from a store and you go to jail.
Steal a record from the internet and it's called freedom of open space.
Yeah right.
Edit: If you do not take anything online seriously this newsflash might all be a lie as well.
