What do you folks think?
Should there be a statute of limitations for posts?

By that, I mean. After a post has been there for a certain amount of time quietly drawing no complaints should it be immune from removal?

I may hold the record with one of mine being removed 10+ weeks after I had put it up but that was Mod error and we hashed it out.

One that I had put a lot of thought and writing into disappeared after several days but I know why it got zapped. It quoted one that could potentially draw reports.

So, what say y'all? if a post has been there for a certain amount of time (3 days?) without drawing a complaint, should it be allowed to stay?

If it's not talking about something prohibited by this site, or quoting something prohibited.

Right.

The post either violates the TOS or it does not. If it does, then it should be removed regardless of whether it has been up ten minutes or ten months. If it does not then it should live in perpetuity. The chief cornerstone of effective moderation is consistency.

The thing with the limitation is, what if there aren't available mods? A post almost always has to be REPORTED before it's found, it's not like they're reading every single post.

But yeah, I think posts should stay as long as they are not in violation, or quoting a post that has been pulled already.

Hill, I know the mods get sacked with reports all the time. They then devide the sections up between them. I have had reports wait weeks. I usually remind them after a week or so. But I know they get busy, they sometimes miss things, the system sometimes doesnt work properly and a post may remain they meant to delete.

Things happen.

If its not against TOS, if there are no personal attacks, if it isnt quoting another post that is against TOS, then, maybe.

If a post is on the boards for over 10 seconds, I usually have already forgotten about it, and that would by definition make my memory longer than my dick.

I have no care one way or another on the matter.

The ones I was talking about were supposedly "off topic" which would seem to be the least of worries.

It's looking like the consensus is that "Statute of limitations" is a bad idea.

I'm one who thinks there should be no removed posts, no mods, no nothing and let people post however, whenever, whatever they want. I look at people who post here as adults. If they get their feelings hurt or they are angry or whatever either deal with it or put people on ignore.

I go to other forums that are a hundred times worse than this one, no mods and yet the forums are still going strong. Personally I look at mods as "mommies treating adults as children".

Funny, when I see an adult acting like a child, thats exactly how I treat them.

Hillwilliam don't you think any post that has been up three days has drawn all the interest it will get. Points have been made for and against and minds have been influenced or not...What would be the reason for it to be up longer?

A post may have drawn interest/complaints without a single post being made publicly against it.

Then it has served its purpose...I sure don't expect any words that issue from my mouth to be referenced by the masses of the future…How about you?

I can be as subtle as I am quotable, and you can quote me.

I was the original guy that said that little throw away about 'Cry Havoc! and let slip the dogs of war!!!" that has been attributed to that charlatan, Marcus Aurelius, for just one example.

I don't know, to be honest. I was the recipient of a very personal and rather vile post awhile back and I reported it.  It was never pulled.  I would periodically check back on it to see if it had been pulled, but my ticket went through two mods and was closed, leaving the post in place.  I would have been satisfied if it had been pulled, no matter how long after it was posted.

I've never reported a post again after that.  Probably never will, figuring if a post like that had been allowed to remain, then there was no point.  However, after awhile, you figure the thread really isn't going to get much traffic anyway, and ya drop it.  Given some recent history here, maybe it's good that it stays out there.  I figure if someone is going to look like a complete jerk out there, hey let 'em!

So those are my undecided thoughts on the topic.
