I always swore that I'd kick a guy in the shins who pulled a stunt like that.

Daddy knows better than to publicly spring a marriage proposal on me, cause we've seen video clips of people doing it publicly and thinking it was a great idea, and I told him don't you ever dare. Your proposal should be intimate and not a public spectical.

It's cute when it works, but yea a very bad idea generally just because of the potential pressure and ensuing disaster if it fails.

IMO, if you're going to spring a proposal on stage (not merely one in public, but planning it fully center stage), you'd best make sure she's cool with it and will likely say yes. Even if she knows you'll ask.. she still won't know when, so you won't be ruining the surprise by at least getting a feel from her by talking about it in advance. Kindda makes me wonder about hlen's question (not sure if she meant it this way or not though), just how long and how well did they even really know each other? Like, did they meet on online, talk for six months via mail, and this was their first real life date? And like Tfb observed, at least she (Tfb) had the chance to let her beau know beforehand that he'd better not, if he values his testies where they are..
