I haven't read much, but at a guess I would say that different parts of her mind have their own independent lives and do not remember the experiences of the other part(s). It is called multiple personality disorder.

God knows, really interesting. I can't imagine how terrified that woman would be. Though I can see what Rule is saying about DID I would have thought the psych she saw would have suggested that if it were a practical explaination.

I like the idea of it being multiple universes, however unrealistic, so I am going to happily assume that it what it is.
