popeye1250 -> Four weeks today without a ciggarette! (12/30/2011 1:20:31 AM)

I had to recopy this off another thread to which it was not germaine.
It is (was) to Tazzy and anyone else who wants to quit smoking.

Tomorrow at noon will make 4 weeks for me without a ciggarette.
I've used and use cigars, commit lozenges, and Grizzly chewing tobacco to take the edge off and they really do help! (DO NOT bite into the commit lozenges! You'll get a blast of nicotine that'll make you woozey!)
But, don't swallow the tobbaco juice by mistake, it really gives you a bad case of the hiccups!
The mission is to get off ciggarettes so I'll use whatever tools I need to do it.
This hasn't been as difficult as I thought it would be!
I figure I was spending about $250 per month on ciggys so everytime I get the urge I think to myself; "Don't do it, think of all the money you'll be saving!"
That's $3,000 a year! (At $40 per caton here in S. Carolina)
Tazzy, you pay $6 per pack? You must live in the N.E. OUCH!
You need to get a coffee can and if you smoke one pack a day then put $6 a day into it and do it *religiously!*
Also, when I get the urge like when I'm on the reclining couch (with Italian leather with my pad and pen) I take a bunch of deep breaths and hold them, then take a few deep slow breaths and the "urge" passes! I read that somewhere and it really does work!
But seriously, try the Grizly chewing tobacco when you get a nicotine urge! It works! You won't have anymore urges for an hour at least!
And try *walking* too! That really helps as well!
ANYTHING you do to help you quit and take the edge off is well worth it!
A year from now when you're a non-smoker and have about $4,500 in cash in your coffee can (s) you'll be saying; "That fucking POPEYE! He was right!!!"
(Contact me on the other side and maybe I can help you.)

Popeye!!! That's POSITIVELY AWESOME! A BIG congrats to you!

Trust me when I say I know how difficult it is to quit! But everyday without one brings you that much closer to realizing just how much control they had over your life!
Sounds like your attitude is really positive and you are doing what it takes to quit with one exception...using chewing tobacco. That stuff will cause oral cancer like crazy!
So you might want to rethink using that method.

Personally? I used the nicotine patch and quit after completing the program the first time around. Plus I had a lot of personal incentive too. I found toothpicks and lifesavers to be...well...my lifesavers! (LoL) There are also some great online websites that offer ideas and encouragement!

Here's to your next 4 weeks, popeye! A

FrostedFlake -> RE: Four weeks today without a ciggarette! (12/30/2011 3:49:43 AM)

I applaud your progress Popeye. But. I am sure you are aware that using nicotine to stop smoking leaves the nicotine dependence to be dealt with on another day. If what you are doing is seperating the nicotein habit from the cigarette habit, then that's great. Drug dependence is a different and easier thing to deal with than a physical habit of sucking on a burning twig and being rewarded with a spike of nicotine every time you do.

I stopped smoking about five years back. I was a 25 year, two pack a day fool. About 18,000 packs! How many $$,$$$? Isn't that what a cheap used car costs, for 25 years? I tried to quit several times, always went back, if I managed to quit at all. What worked for me was retiring instead of quitting. As in, "I'm sure glad I don't have to do that anymore!" instead of " I sure wish I had a smoke!" Big difference from a little word. The other trick I used was, every time I reached for a (non-existent) cigarette, I would stop and ask myself, out loud, in the most serious voice I could muster, "Why do I want a cigarette? I don't smoke!". This was a blatant lie and I was well aware of that. But. It didn't take too many repetitions to have a very powerful effect. As if my subconscious was taking notes. (Doesn't smoke. Write that down. Got it.) Between lying to myself and retirement, it was what should really be called easy. The measure of easy is, my house mate did not quit, and that was not a problem.

If my experience helps anyone, then good! Otherwise, sorry to be a pain!

And Congratulations, Popeye!

fragilepieces -> RE: Four weeks today without a ciggarette! (12/30/2011 4:02:24 AM)

Popeye congrats---it's been almost 5 months since I stopped smoking. I used the nicotine gum---1st week I chewed the gum whenever I wanted a cig---the next week I chewed half regular gum half nicotine gum---and by the fourth week I was not chewing any gum at all unless of course I wanted a regular piece---(I guess watermelon gum with coffee in place of a cigarette every morning was a bit over the top lol). In NY Cigs are $10 a pack depending on where you buy them--and what brand but even the cheap ones are close to $8 unless you go to the Reservation. Cost was not what pushed me though---it was mostly because my partner disliked me slowly killing myself and also my sister had lung cancer---she just passed away over the Thanksgiving Holiday. She was pretty young. That really keeps me motivated not to pick them up again.

Notsweet -> RE: Four weeks today without a ciggarette! (12/30/2011 4:33:05 AM)

Congratulations, Popeye! Today it's seven weeks for me. I'm using the Walmart version of Commit lozenges. Not easy, but easier this time than last. I think this is the time I REALLY stop!

Good luck!!

kdsub -> RE: Four weeks today without a ciggarette! (12/30/2011 6:37:38 AM)

Good for you popeye…I went cold turkey and it was hell…but after the first month it gets easy. The trick I used was to borrow money and buy a toy I could not afford when smoking. Mine was a programmable calculator, long time ago…lol. But knowing if I went back to smoking I would have to give my toy up gave me the motivation I needed… And… I spent hours creating programs for material calculations which kept my mind off the craving… made a few bucks doing it too.

Good luck and don't worry if you have a set back or two...just keep at it.

Butch

The "treatments" for oral cancer are horrific. Radiation destroys teeth and can lead to brain cancer later from radiation poisoning. If  oral cancer appears on the tongue, surgery means a permanent speech impediment or inability to speak at all.

Frosted, yes, I'm using the nicotine in chew to take the edge off. I'll probably use less than one half of a tin of "Grizzly".
As I said right now the mission is to get off the ciggarettes so anything that helps me do that is a good thing.
As the urges go away I'll use less and less chew (I only use it 2 or 3 times a day now)
Sometimes just chewing on a cigar butt helps too and I smoke about 1 cigar a day but don't inhale them of course.

And thanks for all the encouragement!
Also, I have a can with $250 in it so that I can "see" the progress I'm making.

Well, dang pops, Im honored. [;)]

Tazzy, you pay $6 per pack? You must live in the N.E. OUCH!

Yep to both. And YEP to the ouch. Dont make me come back there to buy smokes... I may have to look you up and explain how your political views are just wrong! [8D]

Im gonna pass on the chewing tobacco. Seen too many cases of cancer and their treatments to ever want to go that route. My grandma used to dip snuff... lol. Nuff said on that!

I can tell you that I am sleeping a lot more lately. Not sure if thats related to the loss of nicotine or the drop in sugar level.

But, great to hear you are kicking that nasty habot too!!! Now I know to temper your posts in politics with that in mind. [:D]

Tazzy, I don't think using chewing tobacco (snuff) for a month or two will hurt.
As soon as the urges go away I'll just drop it.
And yes, I've been sleeping more too since I quit.
How many packs a day did you smoke?
I smoked two packs a day.

Lucylastic -> RE: Four weeks today without a ciggarette! (12/30/2011 11:21:03 AM)

pops I seriously wanted to add congratulations.
I gave up cold turkey two years and nearly four months ago.I didnt want a substitute it was hard, but I havent gone back , not even for one. Ive been tempted a kajillion times, I had constant bronchitis and walking pneumonia twice in one year and I got fed up of the cost and the smokers cough.
Good luck to you and anyone quitting.
its NOT easy, I still want one now, but giving up on giving up is not an option now:)

Notsweet, that's great!
The more time that goes by the easier it gets I guess. Don't bite into those lozenges! YUCK!

1/2 to 1 pack a day... more if I was out with the girls drinking or terribly stressed out.

defiantbadgirl -> RE: Four weeks today without a ciggarette! (12/30/2011 11:54:59 AM)

Fear of pain (the bad kind) and ripping stitches out from coughing is what helped me quit cold turkey in August. I had surgery and my throat was sore from intubation so I was trying to avoid coughing, not encourage it. Thank you surgeon and anesthesiologist.

It does get easier, Popeye. But after few martinis watching the lady setting across the table from you sensually exhale the craving for both her body and a cigarette seems to leap from the very core of you with more explosive energy then a hydrogen bomb.
It’s been over 20 years since last I fired up a cigarette; it wasn’t that hard for me to quit but there are triggers that momentarily make you want to start again.

Congrats Pop!

It's been nearly 20 years for me. Now I am one of those evil, smoker haters. When you get to the point where you just cannot even stand the smell......you've won the war.

The two I missed most were the first one of the day, which was right after I got home from work at night, and right after dinner.
