Cheetah, chimp from Tarzan films, dies
By Ashley Hayes, CNN
December 28, 2011

The chimpanzee died Saturday after suffering kidney failure the week before, the sanctuary foundation said on the site. He was roughly 80 years old, Debbie Cobb, the sanctuary's outreach director, told CNN affiliate WFLA.

Cobb recalled Cheetah as an outgoing chimp who loved finger painting and watching football and who was soothed by Christian music, the station said.

Cheetah appeared in the Tarzan moves from 1932 through 1934, Cobb told WFLA. According to the website Tarzanmovieguide.com, "Tarzan the Ape Man" was released in 1932 and "Tarzan and his Mate" in 1934.

Damn.

Pretty old for a chimp.  Johnny Weissmuller himself died in 1984.

RIP, Cheetah.

I have heard on more than one occasion that deal, and its pretty shakey.
But I do like Wiesmuller and I did like Cheeta.

Very old for a chimp. Wki's probably right that they goty through more than one of them, even just in the Weismuller films, though.

The article I read mentioned the one in California and that there seemed to be some discrepancy as to whether that was "the" chimp from the Tarzan movies.  Although they definately used more than one.

Average chimp lives to about 40-45 in the wild.  Eighty is pretty old, good for both chimps.  Loved how the one through poop through the bars when people pissed him off though.

They used multiple chimps as Cheeta in all the
Tarzan films. Weismuller played Tarzan
til the late 1940's. The official franchise
ran til the late 60's with Mike Henry in
the role. He was bitten by one of the chimps
while filming and later sued the producers.
Maureen O'Sullivan, Weisemuller's first Jane,
said the chimps were all gay and in love with
Johnny. She said they became hostile anytime
she got near him. She was later talked in
to visiting some retired Cheeta's and as soon
as they saw her they started screeching and
throwing their feces at her. So, chimps must
have long memories.
There was a guy a few years ago who claimed
he owned the orginal Cheeta as if there was
such a thing. He was campaigning to get the
chimp on the Walk of Fame. It was disputed.
The chimp had been in movies most notably
Dr Doolittle(1960's) but was to young to have
been in a Weisemuller Tarzan.
Eighty does seem quite old for a chimp.
But a human live to 80'and chimps are
our closest relatives one reason they get
used in medical experiments. Chimps in the
wild are vulnerable to being killed by
one another as they are quite aggressive,
and being killed by other animals and humans
Disease, lack of food or loss of habitat could
attribute to.
A well cared for captive chimp with medical
care could possibly make it to eighty.
