peppermint -> Blocked web sites (12/21/2011 11:15:53 AM)

Gary is back in the hospital. Hopefully we'll be out of here before Christmas. I did not get the Santa wish I made on another thread.

All the hospitals he's been in have wifi for the patients. This is something to remember if you have to spend some time laid up in a hospital. Web surfing can pass a lot of time. However, most hospitals block some web sites. Some block gaming sites. This hospital allows us to go to game sites, but won't let us into sites such as collarme, alt, fetlife, or yahoo IM.

However, I'm here as you can see. Strangely, while Collarme is blocked, their system did not pick up on collarchat. So here I am. The glitch in the system means I can keep up with the forums.

Anyway, this is my public service announcement for the year. Please send some good vibes this way so we can get out of here soon.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Blocked web sites (12/21/2011 11:19:53 AM)

I am so sorry about Gary, I hope he is able to leave the hospital soon.
I was a little started to hear that hospitals block certain websites, talk about intrusive.  Makes me glad that I can tether my computer to my cell phone, and create my own website.
Anyway, sending good thoughts your way.

((hugs))

Ishtarr -> RE: Blocked web sites (12/21/2011 11:38:59 AM)

Try a proxy server.

Some of these may be blocked as well, depending on how strict the security is, but they're is no way all of them are blocked, and with a little persistence you'll always find one that works.
It's how I used to surf CM while at work.

Hope Gary feels better soon.

calamitysandra -> RE: Blocked web sites (12/21/2011 12:31:09 PM)

Good wishes are winging your way.

MistressDarkArt -> RE: Blocked web sites (12/21/2011 1:15:04 PM)

I'm sorry to hear you didn't get your Christmas wish.
My hope is that he is released before Christmas so you can celebrate at home,
and that you both have a happier and healthier new year.

TheFireWithinMe -> RE: Blocked web sites (12/21/2011 1:40:12 PM)

I'm sorry that Gary is back in hospital. Hopefully he'll be out before Christmas. In either case Merry Christmas to you both.

Thank you all for your good thoughts. Once the docs figure out what is all growing in his lungs we can go home. It's being 180 miles from home that sucks big time. We always go to Phoenix where the docs understand about lung transplants rather than stay in our small city.

Ishtarr, I clicked on your link but it's on the banned list also. I'm not really complaining. Any internet is better than nothing at all. I figured I'd let people know that there is internet in most hospitals just in case they have to spend some time in one. I'll try your suggestions tonight Ashjor.

We do have internet on Gary's cell phone, but being new technology babies we're still figuring it out. Had a guy last week show me how to make the text big so I can actually read it!! I was using a magnifying glass to see what was on the screen. Then my son showed us how to use the GPS on it. We'll eventually figure it all out, hopefully before what we have is dinosaur technology.

TheFireWithinMe -> RE: Blocked web sites (12/21/2011 3:33:42 PM)

I would check before using the cell in the hospital. They are banned in the hospital because some of them interfere with some of the cardiac and OR equipment and that may be the case there also.

peppermint -> RE: Blocked web sites (12/21/2011 3:59:14 PM)

It depends on where in the hospital you are. In ICU it is not a good idea to stand next to the life support equipment and talk on the cell phone. However, I have used a cell phone in ICU with the staff knowing I was doing so if I moved away from any delicate machinery.

TheFireWithinMe -> RE: Blocked web sites (12/21/2011 4:03:02 PM)

Oh okay, the rules are different than here.

I have a male brain in these types of things. I can't just send good wishes, I need to try and "fix" things to feel better. [:D]

Try these:

http://www.deductiblebrowsing.info/
http://www.alivebyspeed.info/
http://www.dweeproxy.info/
http://proxy.proxfree.info/

Ignore the request for email addresses and advertisements on all of them, it's how proxy servers make their money.
Just find the "fill in web address" or "fill in URL" box on each page and in there, put the name of the website you want to surf, like you would normally do at the top of your browser.

If none of these work, the hospital has a security system that stays up to date with hourly updates (because most of these proxies are less than 2 hours old) and you're likely not going to be able to use any proxy servers at all, and probably also not going to have any luck trying other methods.

That right there may be part of the reason why they can't get into collarme.  If they have had issues with people(employees) being on the site before, they may have blocked it.  Or it could be that collarme has been flagged as a pornographic website through any number of means and because they are probably allowing children on the net there, it makes sense to block pornographic websites and leave the games open.  That said, it could be pretty easy to get around the block(when I was young, we used to be able to get around the blocks at school just by using a search engine to find the pages instead of typing it in).

And all that said, I do hope that the both of you get to spend Christmas at home together.

RexDarcy -> RE: Blocked web sites (12/21/2011 4:13:09 PM)

pepperment, I have good thoughts going out to you and Gary. I hope he gets well soon.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Blocked web sites (12/21/2011 7:04:50 PM)

I hope all goes well with Gary and you both are able to go home soon.

Most hospitals offer free wifi these days.  My local hospital also blocks the site.  Sucks, but I don't find it intrusive at all.  They don't need to provide it at all, right?

Enjoy the gaming sites.  A good way to keep your mind off things.
