I posted it because he was an important figure during the downfall of Communism.

The quote makes absolute sense to me. To me, it means we as individuals are responsible not only for our own actions. We are also responsible to our community's well-being and survival.

So far I'm becoming glad I'm not a foreign leader this year...

Havel was an instrumental figure in the downfall of Eastern European Communism and the Soviet bloc. A kind of Czechoslovakian version of Lech Walesa. He served two terms as President in the post-Soviet era.

I suspect History will accord Havel a far more honourable status than that given Kim Jung Il of Korea whose death is almost contemporaneous with Havel's. I know whose memory I would rather honour. Havel was a towering figure in late 20th century Eastern European politics, who first came to attention during the "Prague Spring" of 1968. For the next 20 or so years he was active in the underground opposition and served several terms in prison for his views.

A person of principle, courage, dignity and a talented playwright too.

Vale Vaclav Havel.

Nice OP Hlen. Not only was Havel instrumental in a peaceful revolution, he also oversaw a fairly peaceful split between the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Thanks for sharing the information hlen. I'm in a somber mood this morning after reading the morning news. Yes, we need more men like him, but for what purpose? Humankind seems intent on destroying itself. I'm reminded of the movie "Fifth Element." This supreme being in the form of a human female is sent to earth to save earth from total destruction. Before she is to do so, she spends time looking at the word "WAR." on the computer and scans all the atrocities we have waged against each other. When the time comes for her to be the conduit to save our planet, she asks the question "why?"  Why should she save a people that hates so much. In the movie, the answer was love. In reality, I don't know what the answer is. Are we evolving?  pfft...going to top off.

I can easily get down about the state of the world too. Countries willing to poison foriegn shores and then pointing fingers at the starving inhabitants (Somalia). The gas industry more than willing to foul their fellow countymen's nest for energy. Said energy being a major pollutant itself. People who discount solar, wind or geothermal energy singly rather than see they could be part of the whole solution.

Idealistic people moving to Washinton DC only to get as wealthy and corrupted as the rest of them.

There are so many things that point to evil and greed amongst people.

We can't let these things squelch our hopes for the future. We need to teach our future Vaclav Havels, Ghandis, MLKs, and Irene Opdykes to follow the dictates of their conscience.

ETA: Thanks, Politesub!!

hlen, yeah, those are some of the (many) reasons I don't like the "global warmers" (or whatever they're calling themselves this week) .
You mention geothermal, solar, or wind and they're all over you!
It's their way or the highway.
They're not looking for solutions they're looking for *money* from Washington.
