kalikshama -> Police Abuse of Sex Workers: A Global Reality, Widely Ignored (12/16/2011 1:58:10 PM)

December 17th is International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers

When we think of violence against sex workers, we conjure up images of dangerous clients and serial killers who target prostitutes. Indeed, the origins of the International Day to End Violence against Sex Workers, observed on December 17, lay in the decades-long serial murder of sex workers by the Green River Killer. While these are heartbreakingly real forms of violence against sex workers, one area that receives scant public attention despite its entrenched global reality is police abuse of sex workers.

The illegal status of sex work in most countries has not eradicated prostitution. Instead, criminalization has increased sex workers’ vulnerability to human rights abuses and created fertile ground for police exploitation, especially of street-based sex workers.

Ignored in more places than climate warming, sighs,
I know im not the only one that will be lighting a candle in support of the day and the sex workers killed and abused. There seem sto be more and more need for people to give a damn, and less and less people giving them.
I know you can only do so much as a single person, and choosing what "need" to support is very personal, and no one has any right to expect you to confirm to their ideas of what is important, but , it would be nice to not have so many causes. I dont see it happening tho.
Makes me sad..makes me cross.
Thanks for the post tho Kali!

Legalizing it, at least in the US, would go a long way to opening doors of protection against many forms of abuse for sex workers.

Lucylastic -> RE: Police Abuse of Sex Workers: A Global Reality, Widely Ignored (12/16/2011 5:56:34 PM)

Not just the USA unfortunately, the UK, Canada, oh hell almost everywhere is a bloody disgrace regarding prostitution n the violence.

tazzygirl -> RE: Police Abuse of Sex Workers: A Global Reality, Widely Ignored (12/16/2011 5:58:20 PM)

Im not gonna say it. I agree with you Lucy... its a damn shame and its allowed to continue.

TheHeretic -> RE: Police Abuse of Sex Workers: A Global Reality, Widely Ignored (12/16/2011 6:49:44 PM)

Do we really need a "don't beat hookers day," for fucks sake? Is there a day on the damn calendar that isn't the international day of something? Because I've got to tell you, it gets really easy, really fast, to just not give a shit.

What's the proposed solution? See a streetwalker, get her busted, so she won't get hurt? Oh wait, then her pimp bails her out and beats her up for being stupid enough to get caught. Or the cop offers to let her off for a freebie. A fundamental rule we teach our young ones is that you don't get in cars with strangers. Do it for a living, you may find out why.

I agree with Tazzy that legalization would go a long way, otherwise, it's not even on my damn radar.

Lucylastic -> RE: Police Abuse of Sex Workers: A Global Reality, Widely Ignored (12/16/2011 6:52:08 PM)

Of course it isnt
yet you felt fine putting them down then claiming you didnt give a shit
congrats...

TheHeretic -> RE: Police Abuse of Sex Workers: A Global Reality, Widely Ignored (12/16/2011 7:05:12 PM)

What do you want, Lucy? Maybe I should go pick up the whore who hangs around in front of my liquor store sometimes, and be extra nice to her? I'm not in the market.

Living at the bottom sucks. What's new?

Lucylastic -> RE: Police Abuse of Sex Workers: A Global Reality, Widely Ignored (12/16/2011 7:06:55 PM)

Id tell you what to do Rich, but Id get modslapped, and my contempt is on overload today
so
I dont give a shit

TheHeretic -> RE: Police Abuse of Sex Workers: A Global Reality, Widely Ignored (12/16/2011 7:12:44 PM)

Hold off until international "don't fly off the handle because you misinterpreted what was said to begin with" day.

tweakabelle -> RE: Police Abuse of Sex Workers: A Global Reality, Widely Ignored (12/16/2011 9:00:15 PM)

You know, TheHeretic, if you really didn't give a shit, you wouldn't have bothered wasting the time and trouble to share your attitude with us.

You might be sick of "international days of whatever'. Sex workers (female, male, transgender, whatever ....) are sick of being beaten raped arrested harassed ostracised abused and generally being treated with contempt.

I'm confident their complaints are lot more serious and worthy of a lot more attention than your asinine carping. It doesn't matter to any one or anything (except your ego) whether you shut up or not. It does matter a lot that sex workers (or any one else) are sick of being beaten raped arrested harassed ostracised abused and generally being treated with contempt when all they're trying to do is a job of work and/or feed and clothe their families.

your compassion is overwhelming, it really is.. do you realize that in the US alone, there are hundreds of thousands of women trafficked and forced unwillingly into the sex trade, approximately 100,000 are children.. That is just in the US, its millions of them in the world. They are children kidnapped as they walk home from school in eastern europe or countries like that, they are young women that were lied to and told they would have a nanny job in the US, and various other ways. Many are forced to have sex even when they have their period, forced to have sex without condoms so very easy for them to get aids or other stds. Many are sold to people in other countries so they cant even speak the language, locked in rooms, beaten, starved.. killed.. If they are lucky enough to survive and escape, they are damaged beyond belief.

So somewhere in the US, right now, captive girls in the US are being raped (that is what it is, you know) and the johns dont care. they just want to get their rocks off..

Its shit like this that makes me really wish at times that I was a lesbian..

If they want to walk the streets it's their choice. They can deal with the consequences. They are many groups out there willing to help.

Well then, get your ass busy, Travis Bickle.

"They can deal with the consequences."

Because some politicians say it's wrong or because YOU say it's wrong ? People with no mind of their own use statutory law as a moral code, sorry if I don't fit that mold.

And any group that would help me work full time to make a quarter of what I used to make isn't much help.

T^T

I dont misinterpret you very often Rich, precisely because we have the "rapport" we do and I get your "humour" and much more.
However, in this case, I didnt misinterpret you
and neither did anyone else who responded to you.
It may be a gender thing, it may be a hormone thing. it doesnt make you right, or funny, or smart or any less compassionate than you came across.
Like Servant, you "dont care, there are groups out there, let them die they know the consequences" and you can be smug about one less thing that doesnt concern you.
Why post if you dont give a crap, just to appear macho? funny? smart? pointless? ignorant or rile up the females who do care?
this is exactly WHY there is a need for more information, education and people to actually care.
I know not to come knocking on your door.
You arent a lost cause to me, but.... you need to work on your delivery!!!
