Christopher Hitchens, the incomparable critic, masterful rhetorician, fiery wit, and fearless bon vivant, died today at the age of 62. Hitchens was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in the spring of 2010, just after the publication of his memoir, Hitch-22, and began chemotherapy soon after... At the end, Hitchens was more engaged, relentless, hilarious, observant, and intelligent than just about everyone else, just as he had been for the last four decades. ~Vanity Fair

Rest in peace.

K.

This is for Christopher's family, friends and all of those who admired him.

This is for all the fundie religious kooks who (inevitiably) will proclaim his death to be "God's justice" and take sadistic glee in their false belief that he is now burning in hell (the "justice" of a "loving" god, don't ya know ).

This is for Christopher himself... for a life that positively impacted others, and thus was a life well spent.

I am remarkably sad about this. I Read his columns for VF and the Atlantic for years. I especially loved his lyrical, haunting pieces in the last year or so about his cancer. They helped me through my grief about my brother's death from cancer last January.

"I was met by immaculate specimens of young American womanhood, holding silver trays and flashing perfect dentition," he wrote. "What would I like? I thought a gin and tonic would meet the case. 'Sir, that would be inappropriate.' In what respect? 'At this altitude gin would be very much more toxic than at ground level.' In that case, I said, make it a double."

Well I think that at least one thing is fairly certain. If there is a God, both Christopher and the Fundies are in for a surprise. And I'm pretty sure the Fundies will like theirs a lot less.

My first thought was, "Mystery solved", for Mr Hitchins at least.

Whenever I heard his name, I think of the Ben Stein movie about the (non-) discussion of God in Academia.

Polemicist Who Slashed All, Freely, With Wit

Christopher Hitchens, a slashing polemicist in the tradition of Thomas Paine and George Orwell who trained his sights on targets as various as Henry Kissinger, the British monarchy and Mother Teresa, wrote a best-seller attacking religious belief, and dismayed his former comrades on the left by enthusiastically supporting the American-led war in Iraq, died on Thursday in Houston. He was 62.

The cause was pneumonia, a complication of esophageal cancer, Vanity Fair magazine said in announcing the death, at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Mr. Hitchens, who lived in Washington, learned he had cancer while on a publicity tour in 2010 for his memoir, “Hitch-22,” and began writing and, on television, speaking about his illness frequently.

“In whatever kind of a ‘race’ life may be, I have very abruptly become a finalist,” Mr. Hitchens wrote in Vanity Fair, for which he was a contributing editor.

He took pains to emphasize that he had not revised his position on atheism, articulated in his best-selling 2007 book, “God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything,” although he did express amused appreciation at the hope, among some concerned Christians, that he might undergo a late-life conversion.

My son sent me a text wherein he advised me of Mr.Hitchens passing and noted that this would be a good time to mention to me that he(my son ) is an atheist.
I texted back....."no surprise there"
Rest in peace Mr Hitchens, the world is indeed lessened by your passing.

"As one of many who are forever grateful to Christopher Hitchens for some of the keenest insights into what is really going on in the world, I ask isn't there a cartoonist out there who can give us a picture of a louche-looking Hitchens, cigarette and wine glass in hand, saying to a cantankerous St Peter something like:
''Well, OK, we all get some things wrong.''
I think both he and He (if He exists) would enjoy that.
"

The above is one of many touching tributes to Hitchens written by readers of The Sydney Morning Herald. Check the others out at the link below if you like

The man may not have been to my liking, but his passing does bereave the world of someone that meant a great deal to many, and a keen pen to boot. If indeed he was wrong, one would hope that he finds the minibar well stocked with fine brands and some Cubans next to the pillow mints.

Amen.

On the bright side, we still have a few rapier wits around.

Does this mean you're going to up your game even further to fill the void?

Health,
al-Aswad.
