So I guess as an early Festivus present, a friend got me the Homicide: Life on the Street boxset, an item I've been lusting after for a few years.

I'm currently knee deep in the series, and am rediscovering why I loved it so during its original run. Anyone else remember this series? Any other fans?

Here's the original intro for the show. The music along with the visuals does an excellent job of showing the difference between it and other police shows.

Still the best police detective series, of any English-speaking country, ever, IMO. You lucky devil!

A tip o' the hat to you.

This is one complete boxset, not just a throw-together job. Plenty of special features, commentaries, etc. etc. etc. In addition the Homicide movie, and three Law & Order crossover episodes they did with Homicide.

I enjoyed the first few seasons, have to admit, but stopped watching after they did the crossovers for some reason
You should look into "the Wire" for me that was brilliant too

I loved the writing and acting on the show but the camera work used to really drive me nuts. I was never a fan of the jittery camera and the repeating the last line three or four times.

I really did like the show but because of this, I have to admit that my watching of it fell off, early.

I did take a "Homicide: Life On the Streets" tour in Charm City and enjoyed that, too.

I was always a "Law & Order" fan and the cross-over I enjoyed the most (I think it was the first) started with the mass murder on the NYC subway and included the guy that wound up as the prosecutions psychiatrist on "Law & Order" (I can't remember his name off the top of my head
J.K. Simmons).

Peace and comfort,

Michael

I think both shows are from the same producers, and I think they share some actors as well. I might look into it after I finish this boxset.

I never watched it when it originally ran. But I caught a marathon once and I sat there and watched them. Good show.

It's funny how that character took off, and is now somewhat iconic. He even appeared in an episode of Arrested Development.

The Wire is frakkin' amazing. A buddy of mine gave me the whole series. It's like the best ice cream you ever had; you just can't put it down.

Battlestar Galactica was like that for me, too. I've watched the whole series 4 times, now, though, and it's not as intense and edgy as it was the first time around.

Similar to Homicide being the spiritual predecessor to The Wire, I'd say Deep Space Nine is the same to Battlestar Galactica. One of DS9's executive producers was Ronald D. Moore, who spearheaded the BSG remake.

"BS9" ;)

As Rick Berman focused more and more on Voyager, that allowed Ira Steven Behr and Ronald D. Moore to do with DS9 what Star Trek had never done before. The later seasons, from 5 to 7, are ones to keep an eye on.
