What do you think?

Some see Twin Towers blast in architect's design

I understand that 9/11 is a sore spot for a lot of people, but I don't really think that was their motivation for the building design...

Well they look harder to demolish.

As far as feelings go, people are nitwits. What, we need a whole fucking religion now because less people died there than in one month due to medical mistakes ? Bullshit.

And another thing, do they need each and every one of our approval() to build a building ? If I own the property I'll put up a building that looks like a big dick if I want. If people bitch and the city makes me put up a fence, so what ?

Nothing personal but I'm in one of those moods today. This WTC shit is blown way out of proportion. A couple of buildings and four thousand. We've killed a hell of alot more. What fucks with people's heads is the psychological equivalent of being on a football team and watching the opponents score a touchdown.

The people who started shit about this need a dick in their mouth.

T^T

Some see 9/11 in every freakin' thing that's happened since. It was a horrible tragedy that happend on US soil but it doesn't consume the thoughts of everybody worldwide as other countries' have had tragedies of their own, many on a regular basis. To me, saying that design is about 9/11 is just one more example of Americans making everything about them. Who knew the earth doesn't revolve around us?[:'(]

(I believe a dick in the mouth would be a reward, but perhaps I am biased. :p)

It's just like the "national trigger point." People are very sensitive about this, but I don't think we should impose our issue on the rest of the world. I don't believe it's built to invoke 9/11, and I like the concept.

I agree, 100% -- it's being built by a Dutch company in South Korea -- it really has nothing ot do with us.

DesFIP -> RE: Carefree clouds or explosions? (12/10/2011 12:07:20 PM)

People have built tall rectangular buildings in the past and they'll continue to do so in the future. I see no resemblance at all and like the design with one caveat. I'm afraid that the outdoor gardens on the bridge will get too much wind and stuff will be blown off causing a risk to pedestrians below. I really don't think they've considered that.

Kaliko -> RE: Carefree clouds or explosions? (12/10/2011 12:55:37 PM)

Eh. I just think it's ugly.

I think new cars are fugly. I want another 1970 Toronado.

South Korea...

If this was built in the US, i could... maybe... and it would be a stretch.. to see the comparison. South Korea? Would they even remember? While it will remain in the front of our minds in the US, in some countries its has already diminished. I would expect no less.

Build a large complex shaped like a Swastika viewed from the air.

Welcome to political correctness.

MissImmortalPain -> RE: Carefree clouds or explosions? (12/10/2011 2:44:37 PM)

Honesty, to me it looks like someone went out the their way to blur the newspaper picture. Maybe to make it better news, maybe to make it look like something it isn't. My opinion says it looks nothing like either say it does(clouds or the twin towers) It really looks like oddly stacked lego blocks to me.

tazzygirl -> RE: Carefree clouds or explosions? (12/10/2011 2:53:46 PM)

I find it a rather silly design. How well would it all hold in an earth quake?

I agree, 100% -- it's being built by a Dutch company in South Korea -- it really has nothing ot do with us.

Actually the main reason it is so newsworthy  is because that Dutch architect, Danieal Libeskind, is the master plan architect for reconstruction at New York City's Ground Zero site.  So, like it or not, there IS a connection between the two.

Some may want to minimize the US's impact on the world, but even with all the economic problems, the US does remain a superpower.  Nearly every developed country relies on us for import or export.  September 11th was a disaster that rung around the world, with pictures of those towers in EVERY newscast, much like Japan's tsunami, the earthquake in Haiti and every other major event.  The difference was that 9/11 was not a natural disaster, but a terrorist attack.  Something all those other countries fear having happen in their major cities (and many who have experienced it in years past).

I don't believe we should be televising the names year after year, holding "anniversary" celebrations or even build new taller towers on the site.  I believe it is an important part of history, but it is still history.

However, there is a very blatent connection here that people are ignoring here.  As the master plan architect, Libeskind no doubt had seen countless images of the original towers as well as the "in the moment" pictures, since the idea was that the reconstruction should be an inspiration derived from that attack.

It's funny how people mention in the article, "this does not mean that nobody can build two similar rectangle shaped buildings (I hear those are quite the fad in architecture) anymore."  It isn't simply two ridiculously tall buildings side by side.  These buildings have a "corridor" that spans between them very close to the height the planes it, and those corridors are designed to look like "clouds," but do look very much like the explosions that occured.

I think when you consider how the architect is involved in both products, it is very suspect.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Carefree clouds or explosions? (12/11/2011 8:19:24 AM)

Hmm... well I'll concede that you do have a point, LL.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Carefree clouds or explosions? (12/11/2011 11:00:38 AM)

Thanks.  I think if there was no connection at all, I might be looking at it as coincidence.  But that connection really just makes it creepy.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Carefree clouds or explosions? (12/11/2011 2:50:21 PM)

I wonder if he got preoccupied with the images, the forms in the images -- they're pretty striking, even without the terrorism angle. If you just look at them and separate it away from everything else, you have these two rectilinear shapes with organic forms coming out of them, something very ordered juxtaposed with something very chaotic. The tension there might be very attractive to an artist.

Some people really get hung up on things like that. Maybe this was some idea he might've had for a memorial but thought it wouldn't go over well in the US, so he recouched it as "in the clouds" in order to get it made. If the vision was particularly pressing, he might try any number of ways to have it realised. Who knows... interesting to think about.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Carefree clouds or explosions? (12/11/2011 4:21:57 PM)

It is possible that after his work on the New York site, those images burned into his brain and he subconsciously thought about it with this design.  We will probably never know.  If it was subconscious, he isn't going to admit to it, and if it was conscious, he really won't admit to it.

But I think that people all over the world will subconsciously see the similarities, because those photos were like a shot heard 'round the world.  Even though they "get over it" since it wasn't about them directly, you don't forget visions like that.  Think about New Orleans, Japan and Haiti.  I can't bring forward a single image in my head, but if I saw something similar, those images would leap forward.

For those that think the image was intentionally blurred in the first photo, I disagree.  Once you are made aware of what it is, it is easy to see the little cubicles.  It is important to remember that as distance is added, the image will become less clear.  For me, it wasn't until looking at the close up that I could see the cubes in the first photo.  Of course, I have really bad eyesight, so I don't know how much that plays into it.
