Tweak,a girl is certainly allowed to dream...would you accept that I ,a very proud American, can also dream of a world and a time where my country, while remaining thankful for all of the bounty that geography has granted us,lets go of this silly notion of "exceptionalism".
That phrase and belief grates on me....we are a fortunate people, fortunate due to geography and the bountiful treasures of this continent...but we are a country of immigrants consisting of pretty much every other countries native sons and daughters....sooner or later we will recognise that we are not inherently "exceptional"...that we are simply citizens of the world...amazingly fortunate citizens, but not inherently better citizens.

Absolutely Mike! From where I sit, everyone wins when that day arrives.

Every country is unique and diverse in its own way. The idea that any one country is inherently superior to every other country - no matter what the country is - is troubling. All it ever leads to is unnecessary disputes and wars.

Each country I've visited has had its good points and its weaknesses. We're all the same people no matter where we come from or where we live. And we're all different too.

We are all diverse.

I get the feeling that you're envisioning a scenario in which the UN refused to sanction Switzerland. That simply won't happen.

With the proper "medication" one can imagine most anything.[;)]

How would I get a good watch? I really meant how would no country on the SC veto the sanctions and they ever be approved. If President Bush were a arrested persuant to a properly issued warrant, it would not consitute an act of war nor a sanction worthy action. Common-sense tells us that the Swiss would never do this (when do they do anything controversial),

Not too long ago they did the unthinkable...they gave up the names and accounts of some of their depositors that the u.s. justice department wanted to chat with.

but charges against Bush would be challenging to unhold. The more likely (slightly) hypothetical is an arrest of Cheney, but he's is areful where he travels.

Interesting premise. However, when have the Swiss ever arrested anyone for anything?

They arrested roman polanski not ong ago...yes I know he managed to slip away.

If the Swiss did ever take such action, we should invade them and drain their banks.

Now we add the crime of bank robbery to torture and mass murder...too kewel.

Nice idea. One of Ghaddafi's sons was arrested in Switzerland (when daddy was still alive and kicking ...) about 3 years ago - not for war crimes but for for violent abuse of house servants. Nonetheless the US could folllow the Libyan example ...

Wasn't it a film festival in Switzerland where they picked up Roman Polanski when there was the attempt to extradite him to the 'States, come to that?

Yeepers. The Montreux Film Festival IIRC.

It's worth pointing out that Polanski arrest was not the result of a political decision, but an automatic arrest as his name came up on a computer list of wanted persons distributed by the US. This is part of the new security arrangements and international security co-operation in the post 9/11 world. It took the Swiss a few months to figure out how to get themselves out of the mess they found themselves in and release him.

There's quite a bit of difference between the arrest of a Polish intellectual/artist, resident of France, on 30 odd year old sex charges and the possible arrest of Bush, a recent POTUS on what would be far more controversial war crimes charges. It's hard to imagine a Bush arrest without a prior decision at the highest level by Swiss Govt.

In the highly improbable event that the Swiss decided to go ahead with the arrest, they'd almost certainly advise the US in advance. Bush wouldn't travel and the Swiss would manage to avoid landing themselves in an uncomfortable political imbroglio.

In short, it's never going to happen. Shame really.

RE: If ex-Pres. Bush got arrested in another country, what action should U.S. take?

Why take any action, he is after all ''ex'' meaning he is a Mr not anything special anymore and so should not receive any special dispensations because of his former employment, that being if another country has evidence on him for whatever, if he visits that country that country has the right to arrest him to answer those charges.

This is where leaders have to be careful, what they do in power can come back to bite them in the ass, because they will not always have protection, or at least shouldn't beyond what any other citizen has.

But obviously ex leaders are protected, that allows current leaders to do as they wish, but if it was they were on their own after power, would that fact influence their actions when in power, obviously it would except for the mentally ill of our leaders. But of the sane, perhaps we would have a more stable world with people guarding what might happen to them in the future and with that less shysters vying for power.
