Natl merit finalist here. The bastids didn't tell me I was as high on the alternate list as I was. I literally had the car loaded to go to miami when they called to tell me I was now a natl merit scholar but I had to use it at UT. College woulda been a lot cheaper since tuition went up at miami over the next 4 years but my scholarship didn't.

Well, there are two ways to read the OP-

1) Standardized tests don't mean diddly and that people that do well on them have no useful abilities.
2) That its possible to be promoted to a position of importance with few skills.

I dunno. I tend to think that the Peter principle (individual rise to their level of competence- plus one step higher) tends to apply in many cases. However, with very well paid people, often there are direct violations of the Peter principle in that people rise several levels above their position of competence.

From my perspective- the Republicans have been on an anti intellectual kick since Ronnie Rayguns, and this is a foreseeable outcome. In 1960- we had 10 jobs/scientist. By 2010- we probably have 2-3 scientists per job. In the 1960s- our economy was the envy of the world. By 2008- we'd nearly crashed the global economy and we've got high unemployment rates still.

So either the tests are meaningless, and even if you've got the brains to do well on them, it doesn't matter because other skills are more important- or the tests serve a useful purpose in identifying at least a subset of people with valuable skills and that some morons have gotten very well paid without them.

OK- I just went through the first 10 questions of a 2006 Texas standardized test for 10th graders: http://ritter.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment/resources/online/2006/grade10/math/10math.htm

I suspect I got them correct, but I don't feel like slogging through the whole thing to get scored. When I was in high school, I was a National Merit semi-finalist, which like Mr. Hillbilly points out- means that I was good at those tests. In college, I noticed that some folks could do pretty good on those tests and some folks didn't-but the kids who didn't could still ace a tough course. My translation was that if you did well on the test- you had a certain level of intelligence- if you didn't- the question was open. However, that Texas test wasn't particularly difficult, and I must admit, I'd question somebody who couldn't figure out a bunch of that stuff.

In terms of the author of this article- I suspect he's probably a guy that Scott Adams (creator of Dilbert) gets a lot of material from....

that actually seems pretty tough for a 10th grader. I got them all right except the one I skipped because I didnt feel like cutting out a ruler and measuring.

I could pass a high school standardized test easy enough. I could fail one too if I wanted to. I don't know if I particularly like the idea of them though. I can see where they'd be useful and where they could be relied on too much.

And I think that's the point. Every generation seeks the magic bullet/the panacea.

When I was in the 2nd grade (back in the days when we rode our dinosaurs to school ), the big deal was IQ tests. The Philadelphia, PA public schools gave every student an IQ test. If you scored very high, you were automatically advanced a grade and if you scored very low, you were automatically sent back to repeat a grade. I was in the 2nd grade from September until Christmas vacation - and then started the second half of 3rd grade the following January, the idea being that since I had such a high IQ test score, I would be able to learn everything I missed in the second half of 2nd grade and the first half of 3rd grade on my own without any help. As a result, I had to teach myself how to multiply, how to divide and how to write in cursive handwriting. I've had trouble with math ever since, and nobody can read my cursive handwriting.

Today it isn't the IQ test - it's the standardized test. And now it isn't just the student that gets evaluated based on their individual standardized test score - it's the teacher(s) and the school principal. If an individual student knows the subject but isn't good at taking standardized tests, the teacher and the school principal get fired. If the individual students don't know the subject but know how to game the standardized test, the teacher and the principal gets extra money in their paychecks.

Standardized tests today are all a bunch of faulty measurements for intelligence. The LSAT is probably the worst; filled with jargon and riddled with logical inconstancies. Most of these tests, whether it's the SAT, LSAT, GRE, and to a lesser extent, the GMAT, are all designed to create a culture of subservience so the Ivy League can create the next generation of "yes-men."

There is a huge difference between achievement/assessment tests and IQ tests. Because your school district had an asinine policy about IQ tests doesnt taint all standardized tests.

I was smarter than a 5th grader - you? http://www.funeducation.com/Tests/5thGrader/TakeTest.aspx

Yes I am.

Your Score: 100% You - 100%

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5th Grader Score: 68% 5th Graders - 68%

ETA:

To answer the OP's question, I am sure that I would do just fine on a standardized test if I took one now. Even with mommy brain.

Uh, Mike, every living thing has a genus. It is part of taxonomy.

Your genus is Homo.
