from raw milk, and I'm tickled pink.

DesFIP -> RE: Just Made My Own Butter... (12/5/2011 5:14:54 PM)

In the blender?

You can do it by hand in containers (or as often recommended, canning jars) as well..

I know, but the last thing I would want to do is shake jars of milk for hours on end. Although I suppose it could count as exercise.

If I was going to do this, I'd want the easy way.

Sounds like it could be arm tiring, but also sounds like something interesting to try.

Yup, I did it in the blender in just a couple of minutes, as shaking jars for 30 min. was not my idea of fun!

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Just Made My Own Butter... (12/5/2011 5:46:19 PM)

That sounds like somethinng interestinng to try. :)

Coming right up, my friend! You'll be happy to know the milk came from Ayrshires and Jerseys, so it's high butterfat content.

The cool thing is, it's my first raw milk experience, got to meet all the cows first, and handpick out the bottles with the most cream in them. How fun is that?

It's a local farm, to which I've bought a monthly share in, so I'll get it weekly. Why didn't I do this sooner?!

My way was easier than the urls. I pulled the cream off the top yesterday, and let it sit for over 12 hours. Then threw it in the blender until it acquired some decent, soft form, threw in a bit of salt, blended again, then drained it out over several paper towels over a seive for a couple of hours. Squeezed out the excess liquid, and Voila, Butter! Can't get much easier than that.

NiceButMeanGirl -> RE: Just Made My Own Butter... (12/5/2011 6:07:05 PM)

Making butter is fun! And, btw, the excess liquid you squeeze out is buttermilk. But if you're saving buttermilk, you'd do it before adding the salt to the butter.

DarkSteven -> RE: Just Made My Own Butter... (12/5/2011 6:22:25 PM)

Cool!

Now not only am I jealous (in a sense kinda) but I am also disappointed because I thought this thread was going to be something horrendous. I mean this is not disney.com.

Try harder :-)

Oh, that's nothing.  When you make your own milk, i'll be impressed.

So would I! Clever comeback.

Umm. Lots of women have made their own milk. They just didn't make butter out of it,

What's more, if you add a tablespoon of the buttermilk to some of that cream and leave it out on your counter for 12 hours, you get Creme Fraiche - an amazing rich thickened cream with just a hint of tartness that can be used in soups, dips, desserts, or just about anything!

needlesandpins -> RE: Just Made My Own Butter... (12/6/2011 12:07:19 PM)

gosh, the last time i made butter i must have been about six. i remember doing it at school as part of a project where we made our own bread and grew our own salad. i thought it was great fun that we had produced all these things to make our own sarnies.

i don't like milk, but do like cream, although it gives me a sore throat if i have too much, and can go nuts with real butter so long as it's megga fresh. the cream it's made from has to be megga fresh too or i can't bare it.

that said, it's propably a good job i can't get my hands on your butter or it wouldn't last long lol

well done you

needles
