Fornica -> My dog keeps sitting on people (12/5/2011 7:03:07 AM)

For some reason, I adopted a 4 year old, 125lb Great Pyrenees mix.
She is like a small horse (we don't tell her that though, we tell her she is petite and delicate, as to not ruin her self esteem).
She is a big, lazy, drooling beast. She's incredibly protective and obedient.
The only issue we have is that she has no "size awareness".
The children will be sitting on the couch, and Bella will climb up to join them (she think she's people), and suddenly 3 of the kids will be covered in dog.
She also has no idea how large her back end is (I can relate to this part), and whilst attempting to plunk it down, often lands her massive posterior on my foot, or knocks the trying-to-learn-to-walk one year old onto her noggin in the process.
There is no solution to this, really, I just wanted to share a snapshot of my life.

Actually there is a solution but if you do not mind......then it will not be solved.

Here she is. By comparison, that is my 10 year old with her.

I don't believe that your dog can't be taught spatial awareness.

The dog is lovely as is the child but I really caution you about putting photos of children on this site.

Omigoooossshhhhh ^_^ I loooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrvvvvvvvvvveeeee those dogs!!!

Anyway, there are solutions, it just takes consistency. The dog may not understand the size issue (some dogs get it, some don't -- or they don't care :p) but you can at least teach the dog not to sit on people on the couch.
My dog learned to wait until he was invited, since he would climb up and break or mess up things I had sitting on the couch.

Hooray for giant dogs. ^_^
There was one in the area back home; he could look straight into the windows of the van we had a the time. He was ridiculously huge. I've never seen another one as big as he was.

I liked big dogs until this past summer. Nothing like having half your head in a Mastiff's mouth to make you change your mind about how nice big dogs are. To her credit she could have taken off half my face but left me with one small puncture wound from a canine.

Moral of story...never babysit a huge dog and her 12 puppies no matter how well you thought she knew you.

The Dog Whisperer has beau coup episodes on how to easily resolve this sort of behavior, which sounds more along the lines of, "You belong to me (instead of the other way around, 'cause nobody's taught me otherwise), therefore I can be in your space and on your body," without asking and waiting for permission. Kind of a relatively benign attitude of dominance. Relatively harmless, except for the obvious "smush' factor, but I wouldn't support it, personally.

Any behaviors in other areas that might resemble this, or does this stand alone?

Oh crap..I thought the photo was obscure enough. Yikes. Sorry.
Here's just the beast.

What a cutie patootie.

I don't know whether that "face" is normal for him, or whether I am mis-reading it, but his eyes/brows say to me, "I'm not so sure of myself, am a little fearful, lack direction and correction, and therefore need to somewhat over assert my dominance at times.

Am I on or off the mark?

To me, he looks like he recently got in trouble and is remorseful about his behavior.

I guess without knowing the situation surrounding the picture, we'll never know.

Fornica -> RE: My dog keeps sitting on people (12/5/2011 11:40:04 AM)

Nope, it's just her normal face..LOL.
she is actually really well behaved, and if we say Bella! scootch OVER, she will. She just loves cuddling..lol.

LaTigresse -> RE: My dog keeps sitting on people (12/5/2011 11:41:06 AM)

His face reminds me of my sister's big mastiff. Always had a sad look on his face. Great dog......if you didn't mind the flying slime bombs whenever he shook his massive head.

Awwww, Bella was the name of one of my most special dogs! I still, after nearly 10 years, miss that dog terribly.

Dusky- She actually does wait for the nod to come sit with the kids, etc. It's just comical because you can tell she has NO idea how huge she is. Even with the baby, she won't take food or anything, even if the baby is waving it over her nose. She waits for me to say it's ok :)

calamitysandra -> RE: My dog keeps sitting on people (12/5/2011 12:01:09 PM)

I can comiserate. We have a Newfoundland dog who believes he is a lap dog.
So many amusing moments.

Sweet and funny. So it really is she just has no clue as to her size and how it impacts others. Sorry for mis-reading her pic.

Hillwilliam -> RE: My dog keeps sitting on people (12/5/2011 1:57:33 PM)

I have a lap bloodhound.

Lucylastic -> RE: My dog keeps sitting on people (12/5/2011 2:00:53 PM)
