I dont see it as particularly new. He has always focused his campaigning on the elitists and the free-riders. This op-ed leaves out unions as part of the target constituency, and I dont think he is close to abandoning them.

It is not clear if Obama wants to stay for the second term. If he does, he should not worry too much. The Republicans will the most likely shoot themselves to the head. If it will be Romney, who no different compared to Obama, people will not get excited for support. Newt Gingrich, of course, would be an another "Bob Dole" with absolutely no chance of getting elected.
