The why is real easy, Tazzy. To sell more copies of the magazine, in the various markets. They either think that "anxiety" won't be a big seller overseas, or that Americans don't much give a shit about more revolutions. There was an old thread on something very similar. Let me see if I can find it.

I would be more likely to buy the overseas one myself. Anxiety is easily fixed with a bottle of jack and someone to cuddle with.

With the Newsweek cover, is it easier, for some, to assume that bad news about Afghanistan was being hidden from the primary market, rather than the much simpler reasoning that putting a picture of an accomplished, independent, extremely successful, lesbian on the cover might not go over so well in other parts of the world.

And yet I dont often pick up that magazine to read because it seems like there is more fluff than substance by the looks of the covers. Almost looks like a tabloid pic.

A lot of US stuff is of little interest to overseas subscribers, and the other way around for international (we have a bad reputation that way.) Of course, if you'd looked at the covers before that meme hit the net, you wouldn't have asked the question.
