And they are going after the 1% - the military veterans.

http://videocafe.crooksandliars.com/heather/stephen-colbert-slams-super-committee-and-c

You see a failure by the Super Committee triggers automatic deep cuts to military spending. Senate Republicans say they will try to untrigger that trigger, but Obama promises a veto to untrigger the triggered trigger. But to avoid these cuts in defense someone has to sacrifice and we all know who that someone should be and they are the subject of tonight's Word... the 1 percent.

Folks, everybody's talking about about it. There is a tiny minority of Americans who could be doing a lot more for our nation. A minority who live a lifestyle the 99 percent could not imagine. You know who I'm talking about. I'm talking about military veterans.

They have till Midnight tonight, I believe, in order for the CBO to score it in time for it to be posted to the web for the 48 hours rule. (could have been midnight last night, I have been a bit distracted with Binxie as of late)

Pretty slow clock. This week's deadline is meaningless. The cuts dont take effect until 2013, during which time a real budget could actually get passed.

Funny that wasnt the ticket when it was a Dem House, Senate and White House for two years. Keep dreaming.

It will be mostly symbolic but will basically mean the cons can`t or won`t lead.

They are in control of the HofRs and control the purse strings.

The "super" duper pooper-scooper committee was a punt, by gutless Cantor and J-boner to put off doing their job.

And for political cover. The super committee was for hiding behind. They wanted to be able to cast blame on something other than their failure,so make a "super committee" to scapegoat.

Yes the dead-line is symbolic but much of politics is symbolism.

In this case, the symbolism is republican failure.

The country historically works best when Congress and the WH are of different parties.

Regarding recently. Look at Clinton's second term.

And Clinton's second term, like most of those times when Congress and the WH are different parties that worked so well, was a GOP Congress. And the times when all 3 were the same that worked well were also a GOP Congress. I think Im seeing a trend here.

Owner59 -> RE: Tick tock...Automatic spending cuts for the US. (11/21/2011 8:44:25 AM)

Clinton was very sucessful at getting his agenda through, using the cons(newty with as speaker)as a foil.

newty and the 94s were a big reason why Clinton won a 2nd term.

I think President Obama will also benefit from an unpopular congress in his re-election, in the same way.

Personally,I`ll never forgive newty for un-wittingly helping bin-laden,in the years leading up to September 11,2001.

I think the grand majority of Americans know the super committee is a total failure. Its sadly disappointing that even with their precious sacred cow on the chopping block, Republicans would rather the country fail than the Bush Tax Cuts expire. Things seem to work somewhat well when we didnt have a Tea Party in elected office....

But, why should Republicans take ownership for their failures? When was the last time any of us heard or saw Republicans hold themselves to the same level of accountibility and responsibility as they slam Democrats (andt he President most importantly) on an hourly basis? To be a good Republicans is to be without responsibility for one's actions and words.

By they way, it must be an easy job to show up to Congress, say 'No' all the time and produce nothing useful for America; Why did those Tea Party idiots get elected (oh, cus they bitched at others doing the exact samething back before 2011)?

Political theatre again/still. The headlines tell you what to think and talk about, but it's not what you really should be thinking or talking about.

Too bad you have the parties reversed and you are totally wrong about the GOP half of the committee's position on the Bush Tax cuts. Other than those minor errors <cough> youre totally right.

Owner59 -> RE: Tick tock...Automatic spending cuts for the US. (11/21/2011 10:04:21 AM)

Who controls the house of reps?

Leadership means you lead.

J-boner should step down if he can`t manage that.

So is being complete losers going to be your winning gop strategy?

slvemike4u -> RE: Tick tock...Automatic spending cuts for the US. (11/21/2011 10:05:07 AM)

So the GOP's position on the "temporary" Bush tax cuts is to let them expire ?
Is that really the proposition you are putting out here ?

housesub4you -> RE: Tick tock...Automatic spending cuts for the US. (11/21/2011 2:40:11 PM)

They keep asking to make the temp Bush tax cuts permanent....Here is a time line of the stupper committe....seems the GOP has really only offered tax cuts to the top 1% and everybody else pays more  Remember when this all started and Bonner said...Well we got 98% of what we wanted but it is still not good enough........

February 14, 2011: President Barack Obama submits budget for 2012 with about $2 trillion in deficit reduction, half of which come from spending cuts.

April 15, 2011: House passes Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) budget, which includes $5.8 trillion in spending cuts along with tax cuts for the richest Americans.

May 5, 2011: Vice President Joe Biden begins debt talks.

May 11, 2011: Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) says he will not raise debt limit without spending cuts that match how much the limit is raised.

June 23, 2011: Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) walks away from debt ceiling talks with Biden after refusing to consider any tax increases. The administration had offered $2.4 trillion in spending cuts for $400 billion in taxes, an 83:17 split.

July 7, 2011: Obama and Boehner begin debt-ceiling negotiations.

July 9, 2011: Boehner walks away from Obama’s “grand bargain”: $4 trillion in debt reduction comprised of $1 trillion in revenue and $3 trillion in spending cuts, including entitlement reforms.

July 19, 2011: The Gang of Six proposes a $4 trillion deficit reduction plan, including $2 trillion in revenue.

July 22, 2011: Again, Boehner walks away from negotiations after Obama offers $1.2 trillion in revenues and $1.6 trillion in spending cuts, including entitlements.

July 31, 2011: Debt ceiling agreement is reached, cutting $1 trillion in spending immediately and establishing the super committee to reduce deficits by at least an additional $1.2 trillion.

October 26, 2011: Democrats first super committee offer is $3 trillion in deficit reduction comprised of about $1.3 trillion in revenues and $1.7 trillion in spending cuts, including cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. Republicans immediately reject it. Republicans’ first super committee offer is $2.2 trillion in deficit reduction, which includes no new tax revenues.

November 8, 2011: Republicans’ second super committee offer is $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction. It does include $300 billion in new tax revenue, but in exchange for extending the Bush tax cuts and lowering the top tax rate. The plan would ultimately cut taxes for the wealthy and raise them for everyone else.

November 10, 2011: Democrats’ second offer is $2.3 trillion in deficit reduction, consisting of $1.3 trillion in spending cuts and $1 trillion in revenue. The revenue would be split between $350 billion in concrete measures and $650 billion in future tax reform. Republicans reject it.

November 11, 2011: Democrats agree to Republicans’ top lines including just $400 billion in revenues and $875 billion in spending cuts, but refuse to accept the GOP’s tax cut for the rich. Republicans reject it and make their final offer: $640 billion in spending cuts and $3 billion in revenues.

I think you need to re-examine history. The last 4 years under Clinton went reasonably well as far as getting an annual budget done but nothing major got done.

Medicare and the Civil Rights Acts were passed by a Democratic government. All of the New Deal and WWII was with a Democratic government. The Marshall Plan was enacted by a Democratic government.

The GOP discussed letting ALL of the Bush tax cuts expire, (you know, the ones that favored the rich), but the Dems would have no part of it. Why? Because it hurt the non-rich too much.

Clowns.
