ORIGINAL: tazzygirl Close the Department of Education... thats all... nothing more... except its odd how he didnt specify that it would only be at the federal level. Each state has a Department of Education as well. President Ronald Reagan promised during the 1980 presidential election to eliminate the Department of Education as a cabinet post,[9] but he was not able to do so with a Democratic House of Representatives. In the 1982 State of the Union Address, he pledged: “ The budget plan I submit to you on Feb. 8 will realize major savings by dismantling the Department of Education.[10] Recall that? Employees 5,000 (2007) Annual budget For 2006, the ED discretionary budget was $56 billion and the mandatory budget contained $23.4 billion. As of 2011, the discretionary budget is $69.9 billion. DOD budget... 2010 689 Billion. 1/10th of the budget compared to defense. 1.2 Trillion spent on the Iraq and Afghan wars.... http://costofwar.com/en/ But, yeah, MAJOR savings. Right? How I adore your fantasy world. Your a liar, the government spent 900.2 Billion in 2011 on education, nice try trying to compare the federal education budget to the federal defense budget. Tell me Liar, how much do the states spend on defense, compared to education? Here's a hint, ZERO! http://www.usgovernmentspending.com/year_spending_2011USbn_13bs1n_30#usgs302 The federal govt. doesn't spend $900 Billion...on any single budget. Your source shows the fed. educ. spending for FY 2011 to be at $129 billion and total fed. defense dept. spending at $903 billion...but also including retirement and Veterans. Double the height of the cold war. I'd like to know how they came up with anything like $482 billion in welfare. They must be adding on the little bit they actually pay to the people, to corporate welfare. Ya think ?
