mushroomchicken -> Breaking the rules? (11/18/2011 1:25:47 PM)

I am a fairly avid couponer and I belong to a couponing site with a forum that allows people to talk about up coming deals, what deals they have done... that kind of thing. A woman on there did a very good deed by helping out a friend in need, buying her food, diapers, etc. But she bent some rules in buying these things.

She has since been called out for bending these rules by many, many people. Her defense is that she was doing it for a good reason, so the wrong doing should be over looked. I am curious to see what others think. Should you always follow the rules or can you break them for a good enough reason?

PS  If you arent a couponer you should know that breaking a stores couponing rules has long term consequences. A store is not reimbursed if coupon is used wrong which can lead to more strict (read less money off) couponing rules.

I'm not deep into the whole coupon thing...I tried, I don't have the patience lol but don't stores turn you away if your coupons don't meet the criteria? So I'm not sure how you break the rules.

I thought the same thing. All coupons have those scanner codes on them and won't go through if they are no good.

I do know that some stores openly advertise that they take expired coupons (Bed, Bath & Beyond does this) and another store in my area called Harmon's takes other people's coupons (specifically, Bed, Bath & Beyond coupons, lol).

Anyone know if those two stores are related in some way?

Did she break some rule of the coupon forum that you all belong to, or did she break the law?
To me there is a big difference, and if I can do more good by helping one person to a great degree
whereas it is a small inconvenience to a larger majority, I'd go for doing the greater good.

Of course, if it was doing something that was against the law, I wouldn't attempt it, as it has the potential
for making me suffer greatly were I to get caught.

I fucking LOVE this shit!

I can/could afford to pay retail for just about every gawdamn thing I want (except for a Gulfstream 5...I am taking donations), but I have a pantry the size of most people's bedrooms...California Closet shelves all around, floor to ceiling, and I have at LEAST 50 of everything you could ever imagine....because....I want what I fucking want....when I fucking want it...at 3 in the morning, Saturday's....Holidays....and I want it right fucking now!

I think these people that clip coupons and get 8 kabillion dollars worth of food (and things) for 89 cents are Rock Stars!

I couldn't/wouldn't do it....takes too damn much time...too much concentration.....but I think it's cooler than shit.

I think it's awesome :)

xxblushesxx -> RE: Breaking the rules? (11/18/2011 9:27:26 PM)

I'm guessing she used say...a coupon for "pampers diapers" for "pampers wipes" because as many of us know, the scanner can't always tell the difference as long as the coupon is for the same manufacturer? If I'm correct in that...it's wrong to do. (but I've done it. Not to a large extent, but I HAVE done it.) (Oh, and I'll probably do it again...)

I don't think it's illegal, (but I guess it could be) but it's definitely a moral grey(ish) area.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Breaking the rules? (11/18/2011 10:02:21 PM)

Yea, but don't those coupons also say in little tiny type about other products covered on the coupon? I don't use coupons much, since I buy a lot of generic stuff which is still cheaper than the brand name WITH a coupon, so I don't really remember. I'm more apt to use those Bed, Bath & Beyond coupons or the "get 'x' off your whole order" type.

Google "The Woes of the Pharisees".

Yes, and they say what's not covered. Some of us just choose to creatively interpret what they say...[;)][:D]

Rules ? The way to do it is to know someone who works at the stores. For example I know where I can move cigarette coupons. When the olman was alive he created a few alter egos. Sukim Mi Engotdi, Jack M. Jaws, Crainia B. Damage. They all smoke, but none of our brands :-). You will get more coupons for brands you don't smoke sometimes.

Ms. Crainia B. Damage is an intersting character; it pays to be creative when creating. She is a prostitute making about $150,000 a year with no dependents. She lives in a shed out back also known as apartment "S". Jack M. Jaws had to move out of apartment "V" when I sold the van. Sukim lives in the rear of the attic, appropriately dubbed apartment "UP REAR".

Crainia has all (listed) hobbies, Jack has none. We considered getting a couple of these folks a credit card but couldn't figure out how to gain anything for it that wasn't too risky.

Winterapple -> RE: Breaking the rules? (11/19/2011 9:37:11 AM)

Will her good deed towards one person cause
others to suffer? If the store decides to be
stingier because of fraud it will cause
hardship for a lot of people.
If she can bend the rules and/or commit
fraud others can to. Many of them no
doubt have reasons for why they did it,
good deeds amongst them.
I hate to be all pious about it but it seems
like of those the actions of a few can
negatively impact the many.
I wonder if all this coupon fever what
with the tv show and I know in my
community workshops on how to coupon,
is going to implode and do away with coupons.
Probably not as I suppose they are good for
business in the long run.

tazzygirl -> RE: Breaking the rules? (11/19/2011 9:47:08 AM)

Many years ago... too many for me to want to remember... I worked at a store similar to K-mart, at the customer service desk. A woman came through with a buggy full... and a wad of coupons. The total in the buggy? over 500 dollars... her total after coupons? less than 5 dollars.

lol... on a side note... anyone hear about the rash of sunday paper thefts?

LafayetteLady -> RE: Breaking the rules? (11/19/2011 10:06:05 AM)

For what purpose would I do that?

Well, I figure if the coupon goes through, then they just forgot to mention that item. Kind of like when something in the grocery store doesn't scan at the right price....most stores have a policy that item will be free. I LOVE when that happens, lol.

Killerangel -> RE: Breaking the rules? (11/19/2011 10:16:43 AM)

I have to say that breaking rules bothers me even if it's to help someone. There is usually a solution at hand that would work and doesn't break rules but the rulebreaker is too lazy or has some other reason for not carrying through on it. This person in need could go to a food pantry or another charity to get free things I'm sure. I'm not making light of her issues by suggesting it could be taken care of that easily, but if the couponing friend helped her out at the expense of others, then I'd just try harder to find a solution where none was hurt.

Depending on the type of store the markup on items varies, but generally the markup is a lot smaller than we think it is. It takes a lot of sales to make up for breakage and theft. Who pays for that because the store needs to stay in business? That cost comes down to the other customers.

To me, it's wrong that someone would help another at someone else's expense, even if it's 'just' a store.

It's an excellent lecture on the differences between the letter and the spirit of the law - Les Miserables is a novel which expounds on the same theme.

You should read it particularly if you are a Christian, but it applies to any sort of law, formal or informal.

DesFIP -> RE: Breaking the rules? (11/20/2011 9:42:02 AM)

I'm still confused on how you can break a coupon rule. If the scanner takes it, then it must be okay. If there's a glitch, that's the store's responsibility to fix. I have no intention of bringing a magnifying glass to the store to see if I can only buy the 12 oz box of cereal or if I can get the 14 oz one.

I'm still waiting for the damn OP to come back and explain what the hell the "coupon rule" that was broken was.

xxblushesxx -> RE: Breaking the rules? (11/21/2011 3:39:01 AM)

Yeah, don't you hate that?

OP?...Where ARE you?...
