Iamsemisweet -> Here's how to pay off your student loans (11/17/2011 11:34:25 AM)

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Massachusetts man says he began selling marijuana in Oregon to pay down more than $100,000 in student loans. The Oregonian reports that 32-year-old Michael A. Vivenzio is now serving 2 years in prison after his and Jason J. Kalenkowitz's sophisticated pot-growing operation was busted by federal authorities in 2010. Federal agents found 69 mature plants and a loaded 9 mm pistol in Vivenzio's sofa. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas H. Edmonds said Vivenzio was cooperative from the get-go. Edmonds said he'd had not heard of anyone starting a pot growing operation to pay a student debt. The IRS reported this week that Vivenzio used the pot proceeds to pay down $80,000 in student loans.

A true entrepeneur!  Those OWSers complaining about their student loans should take note.

I wonder if they really found 69 pot plants in the guy's sofa?

*snerk*

when I first moved to Florida, the room I slept in was a grow room, and yes, I slept on the sofa in there..

I now sincerely DESPISE those grow lights

(but that scent is yummy...)

Don't have the way to do it but, Lawyer told me years ago, to get rid of the student loans I had

get a crappy piece of property that no one wanted, take out a loan on the property equal to your student loans.

Pay off your student loans

then make payments on the property for a couple of years

then file chapter 7 walk away from the property and the loan and you are free!

The DEA has a weird way of looking at pot plants.. you dont have to have many to get serious hard time and i dont think the care the size of the plants.

$80,000 isnt that much for a grow op imo.. I also sorta doubt if it would have ended once all the student loans had been paid off tho..

I don't think the plants were "in the sofa," though. That was more a comment on the editing skills in the article.

John's post does raise an interesting ethical question, though. who is more dishonest, the person who figures put a scam to bankrupt out of student loans, or the guy who starts a business (albeit an illegal one) and uses the money to pay back student loans he owes?

I wonder what he did wrong. Maybe he was growing in an apartment or something. With 69 plants you need your own house with a chimney. Even then someone might smell it.

Ironically he might have become a target because he DIDN'T default. Now if he sold the weed and still defaulted he might still be growing today. And if the stuff doesn't sell just smoke it and don't worry about it, be appy.

No, I doubt even 69 itty bitty cuttings would fit in the sofa.. lol but what they call a plant, it could be one thats only 2 feet high or it could be one that is 10 feet high and just as wide, of course you will get quite a different amount of pot from each..

I dont really see a guy growing pot (unless it was a massive multi-million dollar grow op) as being any different from a pretty college girl that.. ummm... "dates" several "generous" older men that "help" her go thru school.. I dont know about John's post, seems like a lot of work for nothing since I would guess your credit rating would be shot doing it his way too.. but i admit i dont know exactly how student loans work and how long a default can haunt you..

It could have been power usage or the hydro meter guy noticing a bypass but likely it was a blabbermouth "friend" that accidentally or deliberately blabbed to someone who phoned in a tip.. but it coulda been the cops flying over using flir to spot hot houses..

A couple of times nosy hydro guys trespassed into my back yard (I was home and saw them) so anything like a bag of potting soil sitting out or an extension cord plugged into the side of the house and away they go snooping..

I always thought the best way to do that would be an underground bunker located under a legit plant nursery greenhouse operation.. lol

Student loans never go away you cannot escape them with bankruptcy.  Interestingly enough the Fed programs do allow payment to be made with unsecured credit cards so you could skip the land purchasing and simply max out your credit cards ... go bankrupt and wait the 7 years for it to get off your record.  It might be important to note that many people who go bankrupt are inundated with credit offerings afterwards because the companies know you have a certain amount of time in which you cannot again go bankrupt so your a better risk on payments hehehe

I know some folks here in WV were busted for having a grow operation inside an old mine

As long as the loans are federal, graduates can repay loans according to their income. Also, working in the public sector for 10 years gets the remaining balance forgiven.

1. You can't pay off the loans, but can buy land equivalent to the value of the loans?
2. You can get a loan on the property even though nobody wants it, so it should have no value?

Sounds like egregious loan fraud and fraudulent appraisals to me.  Good luck with that one.

"Sounds like egregious loan fraud and fraudulent appraisals to me. Good luck with that one."

Seems like it is perfectly legal these days.
